Two yearj ago .she hail an attack of aouta rheumatism. irom which sno was confined to hoi bo-' for two weeks, ami sub.equ -ntly from a relapse for four more. She has been well since then till last Saturday j while engaged in house-cleaning she took cold, had piin in her back, felt cold but bail no decided chill. Two days .later her ankles i began to swe||, which was followed by swelling of the knee joints anr of the hands. She has no-.v dull pain in her shoulders, and her knuckles are very tender, red and painful ; both bauds are affected, hut the right is most 80. This, then, is a case ot acute rheumatism, or, as it is now fashionably call ed, rheumatic lever. It is a well marked typical, i Case. We will rarefu'ly watch the ca.e, and from j time to time call your attention to the various 1 symptoms which piesent tneuisel ves. Aly chief object in bringing her before you notv, is to cail i your attention to a remedy which hasiecently been i recommended in the treatment oT rheumatism. 1 in"an propylamine. Dr. Awensrius, of St. Paters burg. recommends it in tbe highest terms, having derived great benefit Irom its ue in 259 cases which name under his care. Various com neodatory tea timouia's respecting .it have appeared in our jour nals, and I propose therefore to give it another trial. I mu-t coul'csss 1 urn always incredulous as to the worth of new remedies, winch aie vaunted as spe cifics; but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we ate hound to give it a trial. SAME CASE FOUR DAYS LATER! MAY 23, 1600.—1 wi'L now exhibit jo you the pa tient for who n I pr.scr.bed Propylamine, and who was then laboring under an attack of acute rheuma tism. She uas steadily taken it in doses'of three grains, every two hours, (intermitting it at night), lhe day alter you <-aw her, 1 found her much tuore gonifoitable, better than she exprctud to be for a week or more, judging from het other attack. (The patient now walk, d into the room.) i'ho improve merit has steadily progressed, und you eannol fail to notice a marked change in the appaaran-e of her I joints which air now n :-rly of their natural size. I'hue far our experiment would have reeineti very ruccessfull; but gentlemen, we roust wait a little while before ue car. give a decided opinion as to wh it i. to ho the re-ulr. Here is another patient who was placed on the usa of the same medicine on Sunday last; she has long been suffering from chronic rheumatism, and I found her at that time with an acute attack super - vening upon her chronic attention. Too-wri-ts and knuckles were much swollen and tenia. She took die chloride of propjlaouue in three grain doses ■very two hours, aud you will perceive that tbe swelling of the joints has much diminished. THREE DAYS LATER!! MAY 20, ISGO This is the case o> acute rheum ili-.n treated wi.h prory lamine, the first of those tn j B V,tl very dbdilortaute, and it now talcing three rr.'iin thrice daily. In this case it has seemed to be fodowed by very tali.factory results. There was ex posure to cold and wet, and this exposure s (allow cd by a feeling of coldness, severe articular pain, beeuming as it usually does, in the lower joints. There is fever und the profu-e sweating, so gener ally attendant on unite rheumatism. 1 d ; .l not bring til.a pitient before you with the intention of giving you a lect re on all the points connected with rheumatism, hut to eg-.ni give a in al to the new remedy we are testing, aud to exhn.it to you Una typnul cas', us I h-vu called it, than which ti.-re could hot he a tairor opimitu uty lor testing the medicine 10 question.
