IS THE WORLD UNGRATEFUL? THE FRIENDS or LAMARTINE THINK IT IS. We at" e utterly disgusted with Ibe sell-lau datioD which some ol our second class great m enare in the hiait of practicing; and we mean to expose it, even though the task is a distasteful one. The vice is peculiarly, though not exclusively, French ; aad is found among (he second classof great men, but never among •he first who are the real benefactors ot the war Id. Thomas Holloway, one of the latter, whose name is idolized in all parts of the world, and lo whom it is not too much to say that millions of uil crerds and complexions are indebted for the preservation of their lives, —Thomas Hollo *-3V, we say, is never heard appealing either to the gratitude or generosity of those who have derived the greatest of ail earthly bie&sings from his skill ; lie contents himself with the 3ss\ranee that his work has been done, and that !be price has been paid. IVe have been |pd into these reflections by 3 n appeal which is now put forward on behalf 0 | a second class French poet. Monsieur Al pbonse Lamartine, it 6eems, ;..ough munificent ly paid lor the productions of his pen, nesrlec-1 led to lay up any sufficient store for the sup poit of his declining days; and now his voice ! raised against "the ingratitude of the human •see." The argument which he produces lo lirer.gthen his claim, is one which should ra ■er make him blush for his extravagance ; he nvs that millions of his productions have been . ], and that therefore the world is in bis debt ! gut why 1 Was he not paid the price he as ked for every copy ? Or does he think that it ouuds like common prose honesty to ask to be paid twice over. He will answer, doubtless, that his poems gave a pleasure the value of which their price could not approximate. Let us admit this rule, and apply it to another case to test its merits. Health we all know, is the chief of earthiy blesiings; and a k boon which must be purchased, let the cost be what it may ; a blessing, to be blessed with which the sinking monarch would resign his kingdom. Suppose then, that Hol loway, instead of fixing such a price on his remedies as would afford him (when myriads were hi-'customers) a fair and honorable profit, had apportioned the price of his pills and oint ment to the exigencies of each case and the a iiiitv of the sufferer to pay for his physical sal vation! Why, in such a case, the great phy sician would long ago have owned all Europe ia fee simple, and three-fourths of thp reraain dprof the world—for the royalties and nobili ties of Europe were among his earliest patients, but are still too proud to acknowledge that they owe their lives to the same simple but all suffi cing remedies which have been brought, by Holloway'* philanthrophy, within reach of the meanest of their serfs.—"Les Belle's Lettres." ROHRER , S"TH°ACTICAL CAL CULATOR.— A Book ot Plain Rules and Calculations for Business Operation, By Martin M. Robier, Practical j Surveyor and Conveyancer. New Edi- j tion, Published by J. B. Lippincott & Co., Philadelphia. This work contains 204 paqes, and upwards of j Rules and Examples, entirely and thoroughly] practical, such as arise every day in the common j pursuits of Business. It has already passed through j a number of Editions in rapid succession, and is j pronounced by all classes of business men to be ; the handiest book of reierence, pertaining to calcu lations. THU has ever been published. Every example in the book is wo'ked out in full j ar.d stated in a plain manner, so that when a par- ; S'.lel case arises, those referring ro the work will j SOD no difficulty in readily solving it ; in a word, i the general arrangement of the Calculator is so simple, that ar.y one who knows how to add, sub tract, multiply, or divide, can EASILY solve aoy or. dinary example that arises in business, or arrive at the result of any estimate required. The chief aim of the author has been to eschew j theory and philosophy in figures, aiming only at facts and simplicity, believing that business men rare little about spending time in discussing the philosophy ef rules or the science of figures, deem ing it sufficient for their purpose to be able at a moment, by reference, to arrive at the true result The calculator differs in this reJ>eet from all A rithmetics of the tlay, and kindred works—it is a LEY to practical business calculations — it is, in the hands of the business man, what the key to math emrticnl works is in the BAUDS of the teacher in trie *ebool-room —it facilitates time and insures co r rectnrs?. Impu rities of the b ood, depression of vita! energy, paie and otherwise sickly complexions indicate its ne cessity in almost every conceivable case. Innox ious in all ma adies in which it has been tried, it has i proved absolutely curative in each of the following complaints, viz : j hi Dfbihtt, Nervous Affection*, Emanation, Dys ! peps ta, (Joit l> pat ion, Umrrhee i, Dysentery, Incipient S Consumption, Scrofulous Tuberculosis, Halt Rheum, i Jltsmtnstnation, Whites, Chlorosis, Liver Cmplaint, ! Chronic thadaches, Rheumatism, Diterviittcnt Fever, j Ptmples on the Face, (J*c. j In caseso! General Dvbility, whether the result j of acute dsease or of the continued diminution of ! nervous aid muscular energy from chronic coro ! plaints, on trial of this restorative has proved suc i cessful to n extent which no d-srription nor writ- I ten attestation would render credible. Invalids so j long bed-ndden as to have become forgotten in their I own neighborhoods, have suddenly re-nppeared in J the busy vorld as if just returned from protrac | ted travel in a distant land. Some j nal instances of this „ind are attested of female [ sufferers, tmaciatcd victims of apparent marasmus, sanguineols exhaustion, critical changes, and that complicatjon of nervous and dyspeptic aversion to air and exjreise for which the physician has no name. 1 In Nervous Affections of all kinds, and for reason familiar tq medical men, the operation of this prepa ration of l|on must necessarily be salutary, for, un | like the oil oxides, it is vigorously tonic, vvithou being exciing and over-beating : and gently rcgut ' larly apeneni, even in the most obstinate cases of costiveness, without ever being a gastric purgative, or inflicting a disagreeable 6easation. It is this latter property, among others, which makes it sd remaraably effectual and permanent a remedy for Files, upon which it also appears to ex ert adistinrt and specific action, by dispersing the local tendency which forms them. In Dyspepsia, innumerable as are its causes, a single box of these Chalybeate Pills has often suffi ced lor the most habitual rases. In unchecked Diarrhna, even when advanced to Dy6terieiy, confirmed, emaciating and apparently malignant, the effects have been equali decisive and astonishing. In the local pains, loss of flesh and strength, de | bililating cough, and remittent hectic, which gene j rally indicate Incipient Consumption, this remedy j has aliayed the alarm ol friends and physicians, in- I j several very gratifying and interesting instances. ; | In Scrofulous Tuberculosis, this medicated iron j i has had far-more the good effect of the most cau- j j tiously balanced preparations of iodine, without any I of their well-known liabilities. The attention of females cannot be too confident- ' ly invited to this remedy and restorative, in the ca ses peculiarly affecting them. In Rheumatism, both chronic and inflammatory, in the latter, however, more decidedly, it has been invariably well reported, both as alleviating pain and reducing the swellings and stiffness of the joints and muscles. In Intermittent Fevers it must necessarily be a great remedy and energetic restorative,[and its pro gress in the new settlements of the West, will pro bably be one of high renown and usefulness. No remedy has ever been discoveied, in the whole history of medicine, which exrrtsauch prompt hap py and fully restorative effects. Good appetite, complete digestion, rapid acquisition of stier.gth, with an unusual disposition tor active and cheerful exercise, immediately follow its use.
