CROP PROSPECTS.
Last week, alone the seaboard, lbs tun
shone during ona day and a part of another ;
thereat of the lime the weather was misty,
bat there were no heavy showers. A good
deal of god was turned for corn, fur fear fiat
country, and, in cUecTTTuEnTiuouui to tue
growing season. The fruit prospects of the
West are not encouraging. Strawberries are
expected to be In small supply, and dear.
From the Southern States we have favorable
accounts. Wheat looks well, fruit Is likely to
be abundant, cotton has a good start, the ne
groes are doing better than last year, and the
people generally confess that Reconstruction
to be accomplished more through work
than politics. On the whole, the promise of
abundant harvests never was brighter. It Is
true that averse conditions may arise, but
sufficient for the day Is the 'oil thereof. Du
ty and nopo belong to the present. At the
lowest estimate, the present golden sunshine
is worth a million dollars an hour. N. Y.

to serve them, and demanding economy and
retrenchment in public affairs.
Political and personal corruptions have
won the Impeachment game, trumping In
at the right moment to take the odd trick but
Edwin M. Stanton carries off all the honors.
He has done bis whole duty, consistently and
honorably. Relinquishing the War Office as
soon as the treachery of false friends bad
completed Its work, tuo brevity of his official
notification of retirement Is quite long enough
to comprehend the whole shameful story of
the nation's betrayaL Astigning for the rea
son of his withdrawal a simple statement of
the Senate's failure to support logically and
properly its own formal voto of February 21st,
he writes a complete history in his own vlndl
cation, and to the everlasting dishonor of the
'ccrcants. Pittiburgh Gmttlt.

The official vote electa Bowcn, Republican,

The Senate, this afternoon, after debate
rejected the nomination of Hon. Henry Stan

his re-appointment to that office waa opposed
by Senators principally on the ground of his
hostilities to the Reconstruction acts.
Gee. Bex. Bctleb has been accused of a
