wrote many editorials champion
ing her cause in the “Boston La
dies’ Magazine,” and later in
“Godey’s Lady’s Book.”
Finally after all of Hale’s ob
sessing, Thanksgiving became a
reality when in 1863, President
Lincoln proclaimed the last
Thursday in November as a na
tional day of Thanksgiving. It
was proclaimed by every presi
dent after that and in 1941,
Thanksgiving was finally sanc
tioned by Congress as a legal hol
iday, as the fourth Thursday in
November.
Today, the usual fare consists
of turkey, dressing, mashed pota
toes, vegetables, hot bread, and

CREAM CHEESE
PUMPKIN PIE
8 ounces cream cheese, soft
ened
Vi teaspoon vanilla
'A cup sugar
legg
Mix and spread in 9-inch un
baked pie shell.
Combine:
VA cups cooked pumpkin
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Vi cup sugar
'A teaspoon each ginger and
nutmeg
Blend in:
1 slightly beaterf egg
1 cup evaporated milk
Carefully pour fully mixed
pumpkin/ mixture over cheese
mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for
65-70 minutes. For an added
treat always top with delicious
whipped cream.
