higher quality bulls were trading in the upper 170 00

baby calf buyers have become extremel\ conservative

This week in Lancaster County, slaughter steers sold
steady to 200 higher The quality at both the Vintage
and New Holland Sales Stables was improved this
week Kosher demand improved as well, especially late
in the week Finished prices remain very good, with
cattle grading from high Select to Prime bringing
above 100 00 Nationally, the western direct feedlots
are having trouble getting their cattle moved this week
Packers have slowed the chains down, are dark on Sat
urdays, and are back to the waiting game to try and
buy late in the week Packers may get it done this week
as the few live sales that are being reported are in the
102 00-104 00 range The Chicago Mercantile Ex
change was bullish this week as the spot November
contract closed at 100 30 on Thursday, with the nearby
December contract at 94 82 You can bet cattle feeders
are keeping an eye glued on the December contract as
it holds a full 10 00 discount to the cash trade Boxed
beef cutout values have been burdensome this week as
well, as the Choice cutout is down to around
165 00-167 00, with Select cuts still holding that
1800-1900 discount Back in the County, slaughter
Holstein steers sold up to 103 00 on Monday, however
the runs were light the remainder of the week Slaugh
ter heifers sold mostly steady to firm for the week
After it was apparent the price of slaughter steers were
on the rise again in Lancaster County early in the
week, many Northeast packers went to work on pro
curing all the fleshier-type slaughter cows they could
get their hands on which made prices 4 00 to as much
as 900 higher Lean slaughter cows sold steady to 400
higher Slaughter bulls sold steady to 3 00 higher The
cattle supply this week in Lancaster County included
716 slaughter steers, 172 slaughter heifers, 1194
slaughter cows, 155 slaughter bulls, and 480 head of
feeder cattle

Calf Summary This week in Lancaster County,
slaughter calves sold steady to weak Although, slaugh
ter demand is remaining pretty good, with prices still
in the upper 70‘s and low 80‘s Holstein bull calves
going into special-fed veal barns sold up to 10 00 high
er early in the week as prices were mostly in the upper
170 00 range However, demand turned weaker by late
in the week as prices were sharply lower at the Thurs
day graded sale It is no wonder baby calf buyers are
being conservative as the finished market continues it‘s
gradual decline Although, some producers do not feel
it was a gradual decline as dressed paces are already
back in the 20000-21000 range The old adage ‘what
comes up, must come down* has held very true in the
veal market over the past few weeks, especially after
producers were receiving as much as 35000 dressed
only a couple of months ago The Pennsylvania De
partment of Agriculture graded 1376 head of butts and
heifers at the two graded sales in Lancaster County
