Wolff Kicks Off Harvest Tour HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) Agriculture Secretary Dennis C. Woiff arrived at Hanover Shoe Farms before sunrise last week to begin a two-week Harvest Tour to promote Pennsylvania agriculture. “Agriculture is a very diverse in dustry in Pennsylvania,” said Wolff. “It is important to get out and meet the people who work hard every day to keep this industry thriving, to learn from them and to hear their concerns.” At Hanover Shoe Farms in York County, one of the premier stan dardbred horse breeding farms in the world, Wolff was taken on a tour of the facility. There, he saw Western Hanover, one of the most highly sought after sires. Wolff, a Columbia County dairy farmer whose work in dairy genetics earned him a seat on the World Trade Agriculture Technical Committee, discussed breeding practices, genetics, and the business < oU horse breeding with Hanover President and CEO Jim Simpson. The next stop on the tour was Hollabaugh Brothers Fruit Farms and Market in Biglerville Wolff met with Brad and Kay Hollabaugh and several other local fruit growers to discuss this year’s harvest and the recent outbreak of plum pox virus in the area. Hollabaughs expressed con cerlwmat each generation seems fur ther removed from agriculture. Wolff for his ef fort id educate youth, local offi cials, and the general public about the important role agriculture plays ATTENTION AUCTIONEERS!! Thanksgiving is coming... Deadline for the November 29th issue is FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 21 St 5 PM David Lentz, sale director for the Pennsylvania Holstein Asso ciation, affirmed the county’s growing junior club, noting that his own Holstein involvement growing up in Lebanon County gave him the chance to “see a lot of places in this country and meet in their daily lives. The Holla baugh’s also expressed frustration that many Pennsylvania grocery stores and public institutions con tinue to buy their apples out of state instead of supporting local growers. Wolff said he is acutely aware of this and is working to ad dress this through greater aware ness and promotion of Pennsylva nia-grown goods. Following a tour of the Holla baugh’s apple orchard in which the secretary picked apples and talked with teen-agers representing the Apple City FFA chapter, Wolff headed west to Shippensburg where he visited the Wenger Feed mill. Plant officials explained the feed mixing process and methods for in suring quality and proper nutrient levels. Wenger has five feed mills in Pennsylvania and one in Maryland, primarily serving the poultry and swine industries. Ingredient Resource* Manager Geoff Finch congratulated Wolff on the recent launching of the De partment of Agriculture’s Market place for the Mind, Web-based edu cation initiative (www.marketplaceforthe mind.com), and for his attention to the impact of local ordinances on agriculture. The Fall Harvest Tour took Wolff through the southeast region of the commonwealth on Monday, this week, where he visited schools, toured a local food company and landscape nursery operation, and attended an economic development meeting. DonT Be Late! a lot of great people.” Lentz gave an update on buy ers looking for good Holsteins. Right now, buyers are looking for 15 high-type cows, a 120-cow freestall herd, bred heifers due in late winter/early spring, and a small tiestall herd. Lentz also encouraged consign ing and/or buying at the conven tion sale in Greensburg next Feb ruary. He urged breeders to be willing to part with some of their better cows. “The good ones that hurt to sell are the ones meant to sell,” he said. The Nittany Lion Fall Classic coming up on Nov. 8 will offer at least 70 high-quality Holsteins, according to Lentz.
