SHUPP ESPENSHADE Lancaster Farming Staff LANCASTER (Lancaster Co.) As American agriculture con tinues to change and reflect the times we live in, agriculture or ganizations and businesses are trying to keep pace with those changes and see where they are going. The idea of the changing face of agriculture facilitated the roundtable discussion late last week at Agriculture Issues Forum at the Armstrong Manor, Lancaster. More than 20 agri-industry representatives were on hand to help develop ideas on where the agriculture industry of today is heading. “I think it is important to sit down and look at these trends with a diverse group of people,” said Jan Jarret, director of out reach of Penn Future. “It gives it a validity. You can identify trends. The question is, what do you do with these trends? Do you say that is what they are and we’re going to ride the tail of the trend? Or do you try and sit down with what you see and make some decisions on how you want Pennsylvania agriculture to look?” Issues discussed ranged from agriculture consolidation, govern ment, and globalization to niche LAPP’S CURTAIN SYSTEM • Save up to 30% on fuel/energy costs • Barns are warmer in winter, cooler in summer • 4 or 6 ply insulated, with white vinyl outer layer. Although several drafts still re main, hopes are that this final document will prove helpful to agriculture organizations in the decision-making on their plan of work. For Don Robinson, Lancaster County Conservation District manager, it is important to start identifying agriculture trends. “(Trends) drive how businesses respond to agriculture; drive edu cation dealing with agriculture; and hopefully awaken or focus governmental officials on some of the concerns these trends repre sent. It can form the basis of a lot of long-term decision making.” Mike Brubaker noted that this roundtable discussion was devel oped from the membership look ing for outside input on where agriculture in Pennsylvania and the U.S. was going. The discussion will be continu ing among members as they pro ceed to finalize their views on where agricultural trends lie. The resulting document will be a tool for future discussions in other ag ricultural organization meetings. “I think that the document that is produced will help differ ent forums start the conversa tion,” said Jarrett. “It’s an im portant one that needs to happen.”
