The 103-acre farm was originally part of a Wil liam Penn land grant. According to Eaglehouse, it has been in the Matthews family about 100 years, and was owned by “extended family” since the 1800 s. Diversity, direct-marketing, and labor-saving technology are keys to success on today’s version of the Matthews farm. Most of the cropland is used to grow the tradi tional crops of corn and alfalfa to feed the cows. The family also raise pumpkins for a pick-your-own op eration. The milking herd of about 35 Holsteins is allowed to graze in spring and summer and receives no bST. The cows are milked in the robotic milking unit, which Sam Matthews called “the best hired man we could find in this area.” Minus the presence of a human, the robotic milker automatically washes and milks, as well as treating teats with a sanitary dip. Each cow enters the robot voluntarily, drawn by a pelleted grain ration that is dispensed when she enters. The unit records milk production and milk quality data at each milking. Matthews said one of the main reasons he de cided to go with the robot was to cut back on labor demands so he can continue dairying as he eases into his later years. “I’m 65 and I want to keep working,” Matthew says. It’s also about making the farm a friendly place for the next generation to make a living. Sam and Melba’s three children Carolyn (and her husband Lou and 2-year-old son Matthew), Tom, and Jane are closely involved in the farm and store <m> STORAGE & GRAIN HANDLING EQUIP.
