Farm Plan Q£Q We Ship UPS MONTROSE, (Susquehanna Co.) Beth Giangrieco and Abby Onyon, both of New Mil ford, will represent Pennsylvania in two national dairy judging competitions. First they will compete in the All American invitational youth dairy cattle judging contest, Harrisburg, and then they will travel to Madison, Wis., to com pete in the National 4-H dairy cattle judging contest. Representing the Susquehanna County 4-H dairy judging team at the state competition, Beth and Abby competed with more than 30 other individuals. In eight classes of four dairy cows each, they had to correctly place the animals and then justi fy their placings with oral rea sons. With the help of the third member of their team, Katie Onyon, New Milford, they were the first place team for both plac ings and oral reasons. In the individual competi tion, Beth was first for both placings and oral reasons. Abby was the second place individual and fourth for oral reasons, while Katie was the tenth place individual. The money needed to cover entry fees, travel, lodg ing and food are partially LOST STREAM MAP The STREAM MAP OF PENNSYLVANIA was completed in 1965 after a thirty-year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor. The map is known as the LOST STREAM MAP to some anglers Professor Higbee succeeded in creating a map of the highest detail possible a map that shows every stream and lake He painstakingly plotted by hand the location of 45,000 miles of streams onto a 3 by 5 foot map The map sold extremely well -until it was lost several years later Incredibly, the printer entrusted with the original drawing and printing plates declared bankruptcy, then carelessly hauled Higbee’s 30 years of work to a landfill The few remaining dog-eared copies became a prized fisherman’s possession Professor Higbee was offered $4OO for one of his last maps And state agencies were forced to keep their copies under lock and key Experts told Professor Higbee that reprints were impossible, because the maps were pooled in non-photographic blue Then, in 1991, at the age of 91, Howard Higbee’s dream came true Computers made it possible to reprint the map Howard said, “I never thought I'd live to see this day" Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 6, 2003-B9 Ida’s Notebook Ida Rlsser School has started and the rou tine in many households will change. Maybe they will get up earlier and maybe the house is quieter than in the summer months. Maybe there will be little jobs to do and no one to send to do them. We invited our grandchildren for a noon meal the week before school started. They are all good eaters and they emptied the dish es. This year we had to buy sweetcom to freeze as we did not plant any. It was something that they enjoyed along with French covered by 4-H, but a majority of the funds, $5OO for each, must be raised. Those wanting to help fund their trip should send dona tions and make checks payable to Susquehanna County 4-H, C/O Joseph Fuller, 4-H coordinator, 31 Public Avenue, Montrose, PA, 18801-1219 or call (570) 278-1158 for more information. RAVE REVIEWS It is amazingly detailed and names some creeks in the Mohawk Valley that can t even be found on topographic maps —John Pitarres, OBSERVER-DISPATCH Utica ‘lf you re looking for the most definitive maps ever created depicting every single creek, river, stream pond and lake then Professor Higbee’s Stream Maps are without question th<> finest —Howard Brant, THE NEWARK STAR-LEDGER It is in showing where to find out-of-the-way trout streams that makes the map such a treasure to the fisherman —Joe Gordon, TRIBUNE-DEMOCRAT Johnstown fries which they don’t seem to get enough of when they are here. One thing that I have plenty of is big tomatoes. Sometimes I can them whole while other times I make juice and can it. There is a relish recipe that I have not made for several years but I think that I shall have to try it now. Sometimes we go to doctor’s offices for appointments and wait an hour or more, while other times they actually are on time. Then it seems that the five min utes with the doctor was hardly worth the trip. But as long as we can go to them instead of their having to visit us, I guess we should not complain. Recently, I arranged two bou quets as birthday gifts. One was an arrangement of nasturtiums in a teacup with a matching sau cer. The other was a variety of flowers in a rustic basket. This year my gladiolus are very pretty. FREE SHIPPING!
