A3B-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 6, 2003 FALL TIME IS SHOWTIME FOR DAIRY AND LIVESTOCK BREEDERS IN PENNSYLVANIA This fall, the Farm Show Com plex in Harrisburg will be the site of two shows of international rec ognition the All-American Annual Farm MARION CENTER (Indiana Co.) The Indiana County Farm Bureau is hosting its third annual public farm tour on Sept. 20 from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. The tour is free at the Pleasant View Farm (Tom and Tim Wall ace) just south of Marion Center. Local agri-businesses and youth groups are invited to participate by setting up displays, bringing a variety of animals, or just by vol unteering to help wherever needed. New Holland Farmers’ Fair New Holland extends to you a cordial invitation to participate in its 72nd anniversary of the Farmers’ Fair. Farm home and livestock ex hibiters are encouraged to enter in our many categories and con tests. Expecially needed ' beekr nt are .Keepers to enter their products in the apiary division. Honey, comb honey, and beeswax catego ries will be judged and awarded premiums. Beekeepers can bring their exhibits to the New Holland Ambu lance building, located on the comer of Rob erts Avenue and Franklin Street. Also exhibited will be canned goods, eggs, fruit, nuts, jellies, veg etables, crafts, and wine. Farmers are encour aged to enter in the hay, grains, and tobac co categories, which include grain and seed crops and six types of corn. Hay exhibitors can earn premiums of $l2 for first, $lO for second, and $8 for third place. Tobacco exhibits consist of one lath, in three catego ries Maryland-type, Pennsylvania-type, and T-type, with pre miums of $lO for first, $7 for second, and $5 for third. Hay, grain, and tobacco exhibits are located at the live stock tents at A&C Diffenbach auction lot across from New Hoi- Dairy Show and the Keystone In ternational Livestock Exposition. Both shows allow the Pennsyl vania Department of Agriculture to celebrate the newly expanded Farm Show facility, and provide an excellent opportunity to see some of the finest animals in the Tour Sept. 20 The Wallace’s milk more than 190 cows in a newly renovated parlor. They have recently built new calf and heifer reusing facili ties. Their feed is stored in up right and bunker silos. Milking and harvesting equipment dem onstrations will be ongoing throughout the day. Tom and Tim are the eighth generation at Pleasant View Farm, which has been in operation since 1797. All-American Dairy Show Conducted from Sept. 20-25 this year, the All-American Dairy Show (AADS) celebrates 40 years of competition in the Pennsylva nia Farm Show Complex. Six ex hibitors have participated in all 40 shows and will receive special recognition by the department. The All-American Dairy Show represents the very best in dairy genetics in both Pennsylvania and the nation. At AADS, Ayr shire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein, Jersey, Milking Short horn, and Red and White cattle breeds will be exhibited. In addi tion, live breeds will hold nation al and regional shows in conjunc tion with AADS, including the Eastern National Brown Swiss Show, the National Guernsey Show, the Eastern National Hol stein Show, the Mid-Atlantic Jer sey Show, and the Eastern Na tional Red and White Show. One of this year’s highlights is the All- Breed Sale on Sept. 24. As always, AADS will provide opportunities for youth to partici pate in the show. The seven breeds will conduct junior shows, and youth may participate in the Youth Showmanship Contest, 4-H and FFA Judging Forum, Career and Opportunities Night, the Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show, and the “Meet a Cow Day” for school children. on Thursday, Grassland FFA will conduct its safe tractor driving contest at 1 p.m. If tractors are what interest you, please take time to see our display and show of antique trac tors. Many of the tractors exhibited can also be seen in the New Holland Farm ers’ Fair Spectacle of Bands Pa rade on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. Events at the tents will wind up on Friday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m., when champion market lambs and swine will be sold along with other top quality 4-H and FFA livestock. Keystone International Livestock Exposition Pennsylvania will host the fin est livestock and horses in the world at the 47th Annual Key stone International Livestock Ex position (KILE), Sept. 30 to Oct. 6, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex. KILE is one of the leading international live stock shows and welcomes visi tors and exhibitors from across the U.S. and Canada each year. The swine category will host the Keystone Classic Show and Sale as well as the National Jun ior Swine Associations Eastern Regional Show for the third year at KILE. The sheep show will feature three regional junior shows for Dorsets, Montadales, and Tunis, with seven breeds conducting ewe sales. Red Angus, Highland, and Texas Longhorn cattle will be returning for the second year at KILE, with Sim mental, Shorthorn, and Limousin being sold for the first time. The Shorthorn Cattle Show will serve as the official State Shorthorn Show. In the horse category, the Draft Horse Show will serve as a qualifying show in the North American Six Horse Hitch Class ic Series. In addition. Quarter Horse and Appaloosa Shows will be held as a combined major horse event at KILE.
