Six Breeds Shown At Rockingham County Fair Dairy Show GAY BROWNLEE Virginia Correspondent HARRISONBURG, Va. The Rockingham Co. Fair dairy show on Tuesday, Aug. 12, saw exhibitors showing six breeds of dairy animals Jersey, Red and White, Ayrshire (one entry), Brown Swiss, Guernsey, and Hol stein. Matt Hutchisons Val-Inn Dy namic Suzie, a four-year-old Hol stein, bom Nov. 20, 1998 was named the junior show Holstein grand champion by the judge, Justin Potts from Purcellville. Hutchison, 20, said: “The rea son I brought her, she looks good and has more dairyness and a good udder.” In Port Republic on Valley Inn Farm, he helps his parents, Jack and Bonnie Hutchison operate a 40-50 head milking herd dairy. Rosemary Liskey showed the junior show reserve grand cham pion with Monta Vista BW Marsh Mara. Monta Vista Durham Franny, a three-year-old, was named Hol stein open show grand champion and also had the best udder. The open show reserve grand champi on was Ken-Wan BS Pretty Deena, exhibited by Andrew Hut chison. Jennings Gap Dairy, Church ville, was the Holstein breed pre mier exhibitor and premier breeder. In the Brown Swiss breed, Dublin Hills DM Skye, a four- Central Susquehanna Beef Producers To Meet LEWISBURG (Union Co.) Tom Cotner will host a Central Susquehanna Valley Beef Pro ducers meeting on his farm Thursday evening, Aug. 28. Cotner feeds between 100 and 175 heifers in his feedlot, growing his own forages on 75 acres of land. Crops include com silage, oats seeded with alfalfa, and al falfa. The program includes a dis cussion of on-farm animal com posting. Craig Williams, Penn State extension agent from Tioga County, will discuss how beef producers can implement simple, cost-effective methods to dispose of dead animals through com posting. Scott Wright of the Pennsylva- year-old exhibited by Rachel Smith, 14, was named the grand champion and had the best udder. Skye was also the 2002 Brown Swiss grand champion and while still a heifer, also won her class. From McGaheysville, Smith says showing animals at the fair has taught her patience because they dont always behave. Her parents are Jeff and Norma Smith. Andreas Paulsons aged cow, Oehda Prophet Princess, was named reserve grand champion. The Brown Swiss premier breeder and premier exhibitor honors went to the Paulson Fam ily of Port Republic. The Red and White breed grand champion was Burkdale Kylee-Red, a three-year-old cow bom July 31, 2000, shown by Frannie Crawford and bred by Leon Rhodes. Kylee was also grand champion of the open show. From McGaheysville, Craw ford who is 15, said she was com plimented by the judge on how clean she kept her cow. The Red and White reserve grand champion in the junior show was Heiz-Acres Ranger Dusk-Red, a senior two-year-old exhibited by Rosemary Liskey. In the open show the reserve grand champion was Ringo of Jennings Gap, an aged cow exhibited by Frank Swope. The Red and White premier nia Beef Council will also give an update on the beef quality assur ance (BQA) program. BQA-certi fied producers can use the session to remain certified. Morris also showed the reserve grand champion with Shireland Heligo Hunter, a dry cow bom Sept. 30,1998. Kelsey Morris was the breeder of both animals and premier ex hibitor and premier breeder. The Jersey breed open show grand champion was Arco Bar ber Candy Lady, a three-year-old cow exhibited by Zachary Wal dron. The breeder was C. L. Col lins. Reserve grand champion was CTH Magic B Sweetpea, a junior two-year-old shown by Honey Hill Jerseys. Honey Hill Jerseys also was premier exhibitor and premier breeder of the Jersey breed. In the Guernsey breed fewer than five animals were shown and therefore, no grand or re serve grand champions were named. Potts, in 2002 was graduated with a degree in dairy science from Virginia Tech. He had par ticipated in Dairy Judging Teams Aandß. Ashley Shifiet, the alternate Virginia Dairy Princess was on hand for the show. Dairy maids the West Milton exit off of Rt. 15 between 1-80 and Lewisburg.
