Hall and associates, of Evard B. Hall Auctioneers, Newark, Del. conducted a sale for Mrs. Anne M. Barczewski and family recently in Glasgow, Del. The property, known as LaGrange, most re cently the home of West End Dairy and the Bar czewski family, dates back to 1815, and provided the backdrop for an outstanding sale, with many record or near record prices being paid for furni ture, decorative arts, silver, glass, redware, stoneware, and paintings of the 18th and 19th centuries, collected by Mrs. Barczewski during more than 50 years. Attended by more than 800 registered bidders, from as far away as Arkansas, Georgia, Ken tucky, and Vermont, the highlights were Satur day, during the catalog portion of the sale, which contained 589 cataloged lots and an addi tional 204 uncataloged lots, some of which were carried over from Friday’s sale. Auction goer’s breathed a collective gasp when auctioneer James Gibson knocked down an extremely rare pair of Chippendale andirons for $BO,OOO. Bidding was intense among five de termined bidders until approximately $45,000 when the held narrowed and the top bid of $BO,OOO was reached. The andirons, with no sig nature apparent, are believed to be very similar to a pair auctioned previously by Sotheby’s. Auction prices paid included a 1923 Kissel au tomobile, $25,000; a 1959 Cadillac 62, $20,500; a painted milk cupboard, $8,000; inlaid Federal knife boxes, $5000; various assorted cow creamers, $4O to $800; a sewing stand, $7,700; a Federal serpentine chest, $1,800; a cherry chest of drawers, $900; a Hepplewhite four-drawer chest, $4,000; and an early blown glass bottle, $l,lOO.
