E2O-Ag Progress Section, Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 16, 2003 Calkins CAROLYN MOYER Bradford Co. Correspondent TROY (Bradford Co.) For the second year in a row, Randy Calkins has captured supreme champion honors at the Troy Fair Youth Dairy Show. His four-year-old Holstein, Calkins Farm Pete Berachah has also been the grand champion Hol stein in the junior show three years in a row, a feat that Calkins is proud of and a fitting way to spend his last year as a youth ex hibitor. Showing for Calkins did not always mean stepping into the winner’s circle, however. “The first year I showed, I had the re serve junior champion. After that, it went downhill fast for me. The last three years have changed that around,” said Cal kins. Calkins’ cow is scored 91 points and is out of a homebred bull. She stood in the Calkins Farm family’s show string along with 19 other animals, nine of which also belonged to Calkins. Also in the string was a winter yearling out of the supreme champion which placed second in her class. When not showing animals at the fair, Calkins works at his home farm near Troy where they milk about 80 Holsteins. Even though he is a retiring FFA mem ber, Calkins will pass on the showmanship torch to his cousins who already have a great start in the show ring. “My cousin showed the honor able mention junior champion this year,” said Calkins. “We’ll still come to the fair.” The two-ring show was judged by Rick Verbeek, of Tunkhan nock, and Dave Castrogiovanni, of Montrose, and included nearly 200 entries from eight breeds. Taking reserve grand champi on Holstein honors was Ho- Crawf Outside Penelope, a senior 3-year-old owned by the Jodi Crawford.
