ElB-Ag Progress Section, Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 16, 2003 Pennsylvania Youth Excel In Public Speaking Contest, Cow Awards At Holstein Convention WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Youth from the Mid-Atlantic area, Pennsylvania in particular, took home numerous awards for excellence in public speaking, as well as top breeding and produc tion awards at the recent Nation al Junior Holstein Convention in Winston-Salem, N.C.. More than 400 youth gathered from across the U.S. for the event. Ranging in age from nine to 21, these youth competed in numerous contests, held a junior forum, and mingled with other youth during fun-fdled activities, all with the intent to strengthen their dairy knowledge while building friendships for the fu ture. The National Prepared Public Speaking contest drew a total of 38 contestants this year among the three divisions. Speeches were given on topics related to the Holstein and dairy industries. Each contestant was judged on organization of material, power of expression, voice, stage pres ence, and response to questions within an allotted time. Winners were announced as follows: Junior (ages 9-13): 1. Patrick Lundy, New York 2. Brett Shelley, Pennsylvania 3. Carissa Doody, Maryland; Inter mediate (ages 14-16): 1. Clayton Wood, Pennsylvania; 2. Rachel Ebert, Pennsylvania 3. Allison Waggoner, South Carolina; Sen ior (ages 17-21): 1. Sarah Olson, Minnesota 2. Miranda Miller, Or egon 3. Raechel Kilgore, Pennsyl vania. States also had the chance to participate in the scrapbook con test. The small division is for states with less than 200 national junior members while the large division is for states with more than 200 members. An anony mous panel of judges evaluated the scrapbooks on news clip pings, photos, organization, origi nality and variety of activities, and the cover. Twelve total entries were judged. Winners in the small di vision were: 1. Virginia, 2. lowa, and 3. Oregon. Placings in the large division were: 1. Illinois 2. Minnesota, and 3. Maryland. Cow awards were presented to junior members in four different categories: Breeder of an Excel lent, Progressive Breeder, 30,000 Pounds, and 150,000 Pounds Lifetime Production. The National Progressive Breeder award recognizes high production and classification standards for each cow bred and owned by a junior member. Every cow qualifying receives a star, and an accumulation of five stars or more enables the member to be recognized at the National Convention. Four Star winners were Betha ny Barrett, Vermont; Benjamin Dorshorst, Wisconsin; and John Douglass Hardesty, 111, Virginia. Adam Raney of Pennsylvania was the Five Star winner. Eight Star winners were Cha rann Foster, Pennsylvania and Thomas Harwood, Pennsylvania. Jessica Whitehill, Kansas, was the Nine Star winner. The National 30,000 Pound Cow award is given to junior members who have bred and owned a cow producing over 30,000 pounds of milk in 305 days or less.
