Report Supplied By USDA Friday, July 25,2003 CATTLE CALVES THIS WEEK 2329 2061 LAST WEEK 2171 2014 LAST YEAR 1718 1596 Compared to last week's closing prices, slaughter steers were mostly steady, with sales up to 1.00 higher on early in the week on higher Select and lower Choice cattle. The quality of the runs this week in Lancaster County included a good mix of steers that allowed kosher and packer buyers alike to fill orders. Nationally, the western direct cattle trade moved steers from 80.00 to 81.00, which is 3.00 to 4.00 higher; dressed sales at mostly 128.00 trending 5.00 higher. Box beef cutout val ues and the board both lent some good support throughout the entire week. The July live cattle contract at the CME ex pired after Thursday's close; after an im pressive rally over the past couple of weeks to end up at 78.85. But, however the August contract has picked up right were July left it, closing at 78.62 on Thursday; holding around a 2.00 to 3.00 discount to the western live cattle trade. Box beef cutout values were well over 5.00 higher for the week with heavy choice carcasses at 135.76 on Thursday. Local fed Holstein steers sold mostly steady to firm for the week, although the runs were light compared to the previous week. The slaughter heifer run were light this week, and a trend was never fully established; although a steady undertone was noted. Slaughter cows sold 1.00 to 2.00 lower early in the week, but regained all losses by weeks end and all grades sold 1.00 to 2.00 higher. Slaughter bulls followed the same path as the cows, trending 1.00 to 2.00 lower early, and 1.00 to 2.00 higher late in the week. The reported supply this week in Lancaster County included 788 head of slaughter steers, 97 head of slaughter heifers, 1121 head of slaughter cows, 90 head of slaughter bulls, and 269 head of feeders. Graded Number Two bull calves steady, and Graded Number Three calves steady to weak. Milder temperatures through out the area made for more attractive pack ages of graded calves. Demand was nota bly lighter for lower quality calves with the majority going directly to kill markets instead of sifting pens and bams. The per centage of Graded calves moving directly to slaughter has increased from last weeks average of 7 percent to as much as 27 per cent early in the week. Holstein heifer calves sold steady to weak. Northeast veal profits remain very good, with local feed ers continuing to report dressed prices as high as 300.00. The PA Department of Agriculture graded 1387 head of heifer and bull calves at the two graded sales in Lancaster County this week, compared to 1267 last week.
