Capitol Celebrates National Ice Cream Month WASHINGTON, D.C. What hits the spot on a warm summer day? Why ice cream of course! House Agriculture Committee Chair Congressman Bob Good latte, took that to the extreme re cently serving up a giant ice cream sundae on the front lawn of the Capitol building. In honor of National Ice Cream Month, dairy princesses from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Virginia built the tantalizing dessert using 27 gallons of vanilla bean ice cream donated by Tur key Hill. Congressman Goodlatte did the honors of serving the official New York Couple Receives Young Jersey Breeder Award COLUMBUS, Ohio Eric and Janet Partridge, East Durham, N.Y., were recently named by the American Jersey Cattle Associa tion (AJCA) as recipients of its Young Jersey Breeder Award. They were recognized for their accomplishments during the re cent annual meeting of the AJCA and National All-Jersey Inc. (NAJ) in Columbus, Ohio. The Partridges are third generation breeders of registered Jersey cattle and the fifth generation to raise a family on the 220-acre farm. Hedges Home stead. The herd is currently 48 registered Jerseys, with a rolling herd average of 16,207 pounds of milk, 712 pounds of fat, and 560 pounds of protein. Virginia Dairy Prin cess Sarah Leonard of Midland, Va. and Virginia Alternate Dairy Princess Ashley Shifiett from Fort Defiance, Va. helped the Congressman scoop sundaes for more than 500 passersby and Capitol Hill staff members. In addition to helping serve sundaes, Pennsylvania Royalty Rachel Kilgore, Rachel Ebert, and Ashley Chapman met with Representatives Todd Platts, John Murtha, and Phil English to discuss issues affecting dairy farmers, including the MPC bill and Child Nutrition Act. Royalty also toured the Capitol. The Partridge philosophy is to breed cows that are functionally correct, with a balance of type, production and longevity. The present herd features eight Excel lent and 29 Very Good cows. Over the past eight years, they have owned 18 Excellents, breed ing 15 of them. The Partridges are actively in volved in many dairy organiza tions. Janet has been the secre tary of the New York Jersey Cattle Club for the past four years and a member of the state sale committee in 1999 and 2001. Eric was vice-president of the Capital District Jersey Cattle Club for three years.
