New Holland, PA 17557 (717) 355-2361 ({Tfn my previous bam, I scraped two t times a day; and I was tired of it, not to mention the danger to the cows if a cable snapped I thought I would not be able to justify the additional cost until my builder suggest ed a design change which brought the cost down relatively close to the original design. The biggest benefit to me Is the labor sav ings Two people can handle all the chores tor our herd. I save money not only on labor but also on repairs. The cows’ hooves are healthier, and they show heat better because they are not atmld of slipping. During the five years with slats, I have not lost a single heifer from slipping . The cows stay much cleaner, even with my misting system for cooling them. The water has a place to escape." - Raymond Good Good’s Dairy Farm Jobs Done and in Progress for 2002 Heifer Barns • Elam Beiler, Nine Points, PA Stall# • Glenn Good, Strasburg, PA, 600 stall * Henry King, Lititz, PA 600 6 Row Barn Deep Pit • Stephen Lantz, Leola, PA 450 • Jeff Brewer, Banger, PA * James Lantz, Leola, PA 450 2 Row Barn Deep Pit • Raymond Good, Lititz, PA 300 • Weaverlme Holstems, Myerstown, PA • Samuel Petersheim, Narvon, PA ole 2 Row Barn Deep Pit • Amos Beiler, White Horse, PA 20 g • Robert Baumgarner, Dillsburg, PA • Donnal Kauffman, Parksburg, PA 3 Row Barn Deep Pit , Slatted Holding Area • Lloyd King, Spring Mills, PA • Dan Kmsely, Dayton, VA, Holding Aiea Slatted fan * Chambersburg, PA • Ralph Lieb, Nicktown, PA, Holding Area Slatted • El King, Lancaster, PA • Linford Yeager, Carlisle, PA, Holding Area Slatted 116 • Elam Smucker, Lititz, PA • Robert Rissler, Oxford, PA, Barnyard 81 • Christ Beiler, Elizabethtown, PA • Elam Stoltzfus, Hegms, PA, Barnyard 60 • Joe Esh, Lancaster, PA • Russel Fry, Mitflmtown, PA, Beef Barn 60 » Amos Fisher, Lancaster, PA • Stuff Farm, Harrington, DE, Beef Barn an ur original plan was to install I# scrapers. But after 10 minutes in a slatted barn in Somerset County, we changed our minds. Some people stay away from slats because of the initial cost, but that extra cost is made up for in the first couple years. The one thing I like the most about slats Is that there is no expense. I don't have any scrapers or drive units to maintain', i don’t have to run scrapers every day or haul manure like we did in our previous tie stall barn. The cows’ foot health has been a lot better, and the cows stay much cleaner. Our milk production Is up and the somatic cell count has gone down. I give at least some of the credit to the slats because with less moisture on the floor, there Is less bacteria.” • David Wolfskin “We would use slats again if doing it all over!” "WAFFLE SLAT" .qltiSSl «2t£onCori
