I took my father-in-law’s tractor to an advertised
sale and received a number. I also put a reserved bid
on it.
My husband and I went to the day of the sale to
see it auctioned off.
The tractor wasn’t in the lineup. I finally found it
next to the house and went into the office to see
what was going on. I found out one of the employees
had bought it on the reserved bid without my per
mission. The tractor never made it through the auc
tion. I was upset it was handled in a dishonest way.
I confronted the auctioneer. He seemed to think it
wasn’t right also, until he found out his employee
paid for it through the office. Then he said it was

We think this was unethical and so does Jay Zieg
ler and Harry Bachman, renowned auctioneers who
are also executive members of the Pennsylvania Auc
tioneers Association.
Ziegler said that selling on the reserve bid elimi
nated your chance to obtain a higher price for the
tractor. Pennsylvania auctioneers must uphold a
code of ethics.
