Nationally, the direct feed }>ards have been moving ive steers throughout the week at mostly 80.00, which is steady, with dressed sales also mostly steady at 128.00. Dairy Alliance Meetings To Focus On Profitabilty And Cash Flow UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre Co.) Dairy producers have dealt with a multitude of chal lenges during the past year. Weather challenges, from drought to excess rain, coupled with low milk prices have can caused considerable stress and have made it difficult for produc ers to stay focused on long range objectives. As an old saying goes, Calf Summary: Compared to last week, veal calves sold steady to 7.00 lower early in the week, with late week prices closing steady to firm. Holstein bull calves suitable for special-fed veal bams sold sharply lower on Monday and Tuesday as buyers adjusted the 200.00 bull mar ket that was reported for the prior week. Therefore, by weeks end prices were mostly steady. Holstein heifers sold with a firmer un dertone, as prices were able to reach 470.00 again. Finished northeast special-fed veal was mostly 10.00-11.00 higher for the week on very good demand and light offerings. 215-275 lb hide off veal carcasses jumped to 200.00-220.00 on a hot basis, that is sharply higher from the 180.00- 190.00 packers have been offering over the past few months. Contract calves slaugh tered this week were from 185.00-200.00. Many local veal feeders are thrilled to be receiving up to 220.00 for their fat calves, however, most of them are worried about the Canadian border re opening and flooding the market, which would greatly underhand the current prices. This week the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture graded 893 head of bulls and heifers at the two graded sales in Lancaster County, compared to 726 head last week.
