Hayes, Rummer Honored By Dairy Science Club UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre Co.) The Penn State Dairy Sci ence Club recently named its Expo Dedicatee and Outstanding Young Dairy Leader. This year’s Penn State Dairy Exposition Dedicatee is former Pennsylvania Secretary of Agri culture Sam Hayes, This award goes to an individual who rises above the call of duty for the bet terment of the dairy industry, ag riculture, and the Dairy Science Club. Under his leadership as ag sec retary, the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex was expanded and remodeled to become one of the nation’s premier facilities. Hayes spearheaded construction of a new Meat Animal Evalua tion Center. Hayes expanded trade opportunities for Pennsyl vania commodities, and he was instrumental in increasing fund ing for youth shows in the state. Hayes received his bache lor of science degree and a mas ters of education degree from Penn State. He served in active duty with the U.S. Army and is a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he received the Bronze Star. Hayes also holds many chair positions that help agriculture commissions and boards. Hayes sits on the board of trustees of the Pennsylvania State University and is a member of the Pennsyl vania State Board of Education, Warriors Mark Grange, Pennsyl vania Farm Bureau, the Ameri can Legion, and Veterans of For eign Wars. Jean serves as president of the Penn State Dairymen’s Club. She has also served as secretary for the Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show and was a member of the Pennsylvania Holstein Youth Committee and the Butler County Holstein Club. Jean en joys announcing many dairy shows, including the Pennsylva nia Junior Dairy Show and the All-American. Jean Kummer joined the Mid- Atlantic Dairy Association in Philadelphia in June 2002. She is a public relations specialist and prepares news releases, newslet ters, brochures, and other publi cations for the dairy promotion organization.
