Penn State College of Agriculture Sciences Dean Robert Steele wants everyone to know what season we’re in. It’s college recruitment time. He mentioned to about 150 who attended Wednesday evening’s Pennsylvania Farm Bureau political action committee (PAC) FARMER ban quet that he wasn’t there to ask for money or brag about Penn State. Well, OK, he bragged about Penn State. He squelched a rumor, anyway, that said the Pennsylvania Dairy Princess Raechel Kilgore was going to Cornell. Steele noted Penn State was going “neck and neck and shoulder to shoulder” with Cornell, but in the end, he assured those present, that Raechel, Air ville, is going to Penn State. Steele said Rachel’s fa ther (Doug) was at the banquet and “told me,” he said. “I’m feeling real good here, tonight,” Steele told those at the $l5O-a-person banquet conducted at the West Shore Country Club in Camp Hill. Steele, guest speaker at the FARMER political action committee fundraiser (to support state legis lative candidates), spoke about his roots in Pennsyl vania and the fact that “I have a stake in the future of the Pennsylvania economy and particularly in the food and fiber industry,” he said. Steele spoke about his “five points” of sustaining agriculture in the state, including price, profitabili ty, community service, water (the “single most im portant, galvanizing issue,” he noted), and leader ship. The keys remain: technology, while important, won’t be the fix to improving ag’s viability, but an important part. “Is technology the driver?” Steele noted the steady globalization of the marketplace to a more consumer-driven economy. He noted that Editor • „ ; 'S’” r - q ■* !■ ;a, - r -, s “ . i V 4b ; .'%’WtpK •! « 'Jp**' * WjgjMQ r & Associates AUCTION SERVICE “one out of every five rows” of com is exported through products that have value added to them. Steele emphasized how important “collaborative planning” is for water rights and water issues. Leadership must be brought to bear in order to en hance the collaborative planning process. Speakers at the banquet also included Secretary of Agriculture designee Dennis Wolff and legisla tors. The FARMER event, in its 23rd year, began in 1981 and has since experienced 12 general elections and supported some 700 and more bids for state of fice. Contributions to the political action committee amounted to more than $45,000 in 2002.
