Prices for the cheese hover around $l2 a pound. The cheese is also popular for customers who are lactose-intolerant, he said. Although the demand is there, expansion is currently not an op tion. “WeTe doing it as more a labor of love than anything else,” he said. “We just do it because we like to do it. The Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival, now in its 30th year, will again open its doors to thousands of visitors seeking to learn more about sheep, peruse the colorful wool offerings, and taste the vari- ety of lamb offered from food vendors. The event, conducted Saturday and Sunday May 3-4, features sheep shearing, sheep shows, wool crafts, spinning, weaving, working sheepdog demonstra tions, gourmet lamb, live music, and a variety of workshops, cov ering both wool crafts and the sheep industry, to teach both kids and adults. The event is conducted at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship, Maryland. In addition, the American Wool Council will also be on site to provide Rapid Fiber Diameter Testing (a useful tool for genetic improvement, sorting wool, and evaluating how diet, genetics and other factors affect wool quality). The original goals of the festi val were to educate the public, provide entertainment, and pro vide a resource for spinners to buy premium quality fleece for handspinning. What started out from a small group of people has now become internationally known. Event or ganizers estimate that 50-60,000 people attend the festival annual ly.
