Brenda Grubb has been named the 2003 Citation Award winner by the York County 4-H beef club. Grubb has worked with the beef club and its members for 10 years, assisting with project de velopment, meeting, and show activities. Grubb’s presentation was the finale of the annual beef club awards and honors dinner, con ducted at the Seven Valleys Fire Hall. Members were also recog nized for their achievements and accomplishments during the prior year of club activities. Senior division roll call awards were presented to the six highest scoring members, based on their responses and reports at club Brenda Grubb was named the York 4-H beef club’s Ci tation Award recipient for the year. (DPI), the trade association for the local chicken industry, recog nized nearly two dozen persons and announced the results of its membership campaign and Fund Drive at its annual Booster Ban quet and awards program recent ly in Salisbury, Md. Presented with DPl’s highest honor, the J. Frank Gordy Sr. Delmarva Distinguished Citizen Award, was James A. Perdue, CEO of Perdue Farms Inc. Following his college and uni versity education, Jim Perdue in 1983 returned to the family busi ness as an entry level plant man agement trainee. Over the next eight years he worked in various capacities. He was named chair man of the board of directors in 1991. Under his management, the company has grown to be come one of the largest, most in novative, and research-oriented food companies in the United States. His company and Delmarva’s poultry industry are nationally recognized for their environ mental protection pro grams. Throughout ™ rm ™ n the region, Mr. Perdue has made innumerable contributions to com- munity and charitable organizations. DPl’s Medal of Achievement awards were presented to Virginia State Dele gate Robert S. Bloxom from Accomack Coun- ty and Dr. Roselina Angel, a poultry re- meetings. High scorer was Cory Thompson, with a points accu mulation of 8.88. Second was Amanda Thompson, scoring 8.64; Sara Grim, third, 8.52; Her man Hake, fourth, 8.02; Kim Long, fifth, 7.94; and Kyle Grim, sixth, 7.88. Rookie roll call awards were presented to Hames Kinsley, first, Katie Shultz, sec ond, and Morgan Livingston, third. South Central Pennsylvania Cattlemen’s Association awarded two Steer of Merit honors. Recip ients were Jamie Welsh, first, and Cory Thompson. Sara Grim and Tom Welsh were senior club members who received the classic beef club “roast” as they com pleted their final year of 4-H eli gibility. Sarah Grim and Beth Baer searcher at the University of Maryland College Park. Delegate Bloxom has served in the Virginia House of Delegates since 1978. DPI cited him as a successful businessman who has brought to the General Assembly a common sense, agriculturally friendly, and business-oriented approach. Delegate Bloxom, in his last year as a state legislator, under stands the poultry industry and its importance to the Common wealth. He has worked with DPI and its Virginia members on countless issues over the last quarter of a century. Dr. Angel, a faculty member in the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences at the University of Maryland College Park, serves on several DPI committees, has conducted important nutrient management research funded by DPI and the local poultry compa nies, and has worked to improve university communications with poultry growers. DPI also recognized Delmar va’s outstanding poultry produc ers. Leader Tim Livingston accepted an award honoring his 10 years as a club leader. Two specialty cakes, baked and donated by beef club parent Belinda Myers, were auctioned off to benefit the club’s treasury. Myers is well known throughout the York community for her bak ing talents and perennial win nings at area baking contests. Kevin Grim and Mark Foose bid last, at $5OO, for a pineapple up side-down cake, then donated it back for second round of bidding. Baer Angus and Jason Baer Trucking were the winning bid ders at $l2O. William Dietz Sr., made the final bid of $lOO on a chocolate peanut butter cake.
