CDC should be commended for un dertaking this unprecedented assessment of American’s expo sure to environmental chemicals and for its objective evaluation of this data,” said Jay J. Vroom, president, Crop Life America. “The pesticide data contained in the report indicates that the American public can be assured that the regulatory safeguards for pesticides that are in place are very tough and are working as they are intended. Americans can be confident about the safety of our food supply and the public health protections made possible by pesticides. Prior to registration for use by the Envi ronmental Protection Agency, the typical pesticide undergoes at least 120 health, safety, and environmental tests. Such test ing accounts for all populations, including adults, infants, and children,” said Vroom. The CDC report presents in formation about detections in blood and urine for 116 chemi cals and chemical metabolites — breakdown products of polycyclic aromatic hydrocar bons, dioxins, furans, coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls, non coplanar PCBs, phytoestrogens, selected organophosphate pesti cides, organochlorine pesticides, carbamate pesticides, herbicides and pest repellantS, and disin fectants. Blood and urine sam ples were collected from between 2,000 and 2,500 partici pants for each chemical tested in CDC’s National Health and Nu tritional Examination Survey, an ongoing national health survey of the U.S. population.
