Each year occupational therapists help people whose lives have been affected by illness or injury. The people who benefit from those serv ices range from children to senior citizens. Every day, oc cupational therapists help patients succeed in their ‘occu pations.’ For children with a chronic health condition that might mean helping them to learn, play, and grow; for working adults who have sustained a traumatic injury it could be helping them learn to perform an old job in a new way; or for retired adults who have suffered a stroke, it may be helping them leam to maintain an independent lifestyle. “At AgrAbility for Pennsylvanians, we work closely with our clients’ occupational therapists to pro vide a complete plan,” says David Troutman, Case Manager with the Pennsylvania project. “We recognize the important role of the occupa tional therapist for our clients, and enthusiasti cally support National Occupational Therapy Month ” AgrAbility for Pennsylvanians assists farmers and farm family members who are coping with a disability or long-term illness. The objective is to help our clients achieve greater mobility and indepen dence in their farming operations. USDA Cooperative State Research, Education, and Ex tension Service currently funds a Na tional AgrAbility Project and 21 state Projects. The AgrAbility for Pennsylvanians is a joint effort between Penn State Uni versity and Easter Seals Central Penn sylvania. In addition to on-site techni- cal assistance, staff offers information and referral, training for rural professionals, education on preventing additional injuries, and peer support groups.
