Compared to Thursday, slaughter steers sold fully
50-1 00 higher The quality of the run was mixed on
Monday with some over-fed under-fed and heavy cat
tie on offer although despite the mix prices still
tiended up to a 1 00 higher Tuesday's run included
some well finished steers which added some spark to a
market that is losing a little ground every week with
most of the increase in the early week bids noted in
Tuesday's run The high Choice and Prime stock that
was available in Tuesday s run was unable to be
trended as it has been a couple of weeks since we have
seen (he good kind There is a noticeable increase in
under-finished cattle in {.ancaster County One reason
is producers fear the longer they wait to bring (hem to
town the less they will bring as the Board remains very
bearish this summer The April live cattle contract is
currently at 7* 80, with the summer months still in the
66 00 68 00 range Another reason steers arc coming to
town is due to the extremely dry summer of 2002
which left many of the producers corn supply very low
and if there is nothing to feed them then the only logi
cal solution is to send them to the sale barn Unfortu
nately there is no significant news on the horizon that
will ca<m (he cattlemen's mind, especially with what
seems to be an inevitable war in the next few days,
which only time will tell what effect invading Iraq will
have on (he red meat market Slaughter Holstein steers
sold steady with a weaker undertone noted on Mon
day s run However the real test was on Tuesday as a
good supply of the spotted stock was on offer with
most of the Holstcms lacking the finish that was noted
m the Thursday run There were not a lot of slaughter
heifers on offer with the two day run trending near
steady I can slaughter cows sold steady to weak, with
Breaking and Boning cows trading 50- I 00 lower The
fleshier cows have lost some steam over the past few
weeks with the lean supply not hit as hard yet due to
continued moderate to firm demand Slaughter bulls
were not compared to Thursday as a good majority of
the light run came through the door on (he full side

fully steady, with all other grades trading steady to
weak You will notice the prices quoted below are
around a full 1 00 higher than last week's Thursday
run hut they were only stead) with Tuesday as buyers
put the 1 00 New Holland lost last week on this week s
Monday and Tuesday runs There was not a good sup
ply of high Choice and Prime stock on hand and the
few on offer were weighing up pretty full Buyers look
ing for the quality steers had their hands tied, although
they were able to resort to a surprisingly large, and
well finished, heifer supply to fill loads The low
Choice and Select buyers were able to step in and at
times put a little spark in the trade, although it was
only short lived as most bids failed to match the early
week runs The Western direct feed yards were moving
their live steers 1 00-2 00 higher as of Thursday at
78 00 in Texas and from 78 00-78 SO in Kansas and
Nebraska This weeks cash trade holds around a 400
premium to the April live cattle contract at the Merc,
which closed at 74 85 on Thursday, and no one is tak
ing their eyes off of the bearish June contract which is
sitting around 6800 (a full 1000 discount to the cur
rent cash trade) The Choice Slaughter Holstein steer
supply sold as much as 1 00 higher, with not enough
high quality spotted stock available early in the week
to test the top end of the market Trading was very ac
tive on the Holstems, as a few buyers turned to owning
them over the colored cattle as they carried some pret
ty good finish As mentioned above, the slaughter heif
er supply saw a surprising influx in receipts as nearly
140 head went through the ring There were not near
the heifer numbers early in the week to compare to, but
a firmer undertone was definitely noted Breaking and
Boning cows managed to hold near steady with only
instances of weakness noted However, the Lean cow
supply did not have the same buyer support as the
fleshier cows received as they trended a full 1 00-2 00
lower Buyer attendance was good for the fleshier
types, but lighter than normal for the Lean cows It
does not help the lean cow market when the cutter cow
carcass cutout value losses over 4 00 over the past two
days either The early week bull run was made up of
mostly full stock, therefore the Thursday run was not
comparable, there was a
weaker undertone noted
when compared to last
week's run The reported
supplv included 29 percent
steers (564 head), 11 per
«.ent hufers (158 head) 46
percent lows (SKI head). 6
