Almost all of Pennsyl vania’s 67 counties were rep resented at October’s Pennsyl vania State 4-H Show. The show, conducted Oct. 25-27 at the Farm Show Com plex, drew more than 1,000 horses and 900 young exhibi tors. The days of competition, which began at 8 a.m. and could run until 11 p.m., in cluded hunt seat, saddle seat, working hunter, hunter under saddle, hunter hack, stock seat, and English and Western grooming and showmanship classes, besides Western plea sure and riding classes. There were four driving di visions: miniature horse, pony, draft horse, and light horse. A therapeutic riding division was also included. In all, there was 42 performance and 67 production classes. The competition also fea tured a production division, judged on the conformation of the animals. Other classes such as pole bending, keyhole, and barrel racing were a part of the show. A Friday night dance and Saturday evening recognition ceremony provided evening entertainment. A model horse show was conducted Saturday morning. Heather Will, Somerset County, was named the 2002 4-H Horse Program Outstanding Mem ber and presented with a show saddle donated by the Pennsylvania 4-H Horse Program De- velopment Commit- tee, She is a member of the Somerset County 4-H Country Clovers and is in volved in numerous other 4-H activities. This is her second trip to the state 4-H horse show. Lakeisha is from Bryle Haf- linger Farm, her fami- ly’s 20-acre horse farm that includes five of their own Haflingers and two boarders. She has enjoyed the 4-H ex perience as an additional out let to show her Haflinger ani mals, besides learning responsibility and better sportsmanship, she said.
