Pennsylvania’s vege table farmers harvested 15,700 acres of sweet com for fresh market in 2002 with produc tion totaling 628,000 CWT, according to the Pennsylvania Agricultural Statistics Service. This is 10 percent less than the 2001 production for fresh market. Average value of fresh market sweet com was $31.80 per CWT, $5.30 per CWT more than the price re ceived in 2001. Production for processed sweet com amounted to 6,660 tons, a increase of 36 percent from 2001’s production. The average value for processed sweet com decreased from $105.00 per ton in 2001 to $77.30 per ton in 2002. Nationally, 248,800 acres of sweet com was harvested for fresh market in 2002 and 419,900 acres were harvested for processing. Fresh market production totaled 26.4 mil lion CWT and was valued at $20.10 per CWT. Pennsylvania’s 2002 fresh market tomato production was estimated at 701,000 CWT, up 31 percent from 2001. Area harvested was 4,100 acres. The average value was $23.80 per CWT. United States’ production of fresh market tomatoes was 37.3 million CWT in 2002, a 5 percent increase from 2001. Area harvested was 124,900 acres. Average value of toma toes for fresh market was $31.40 per CWT. In Pennsylvania, 7,500 acres of snap beans were har vested for processing in 2002. Total production was 20,340 tons with an average value of $215.00 per ton. Strawberry production for fresh market and processing was 73,000 CWT, harvested from 1,300 acres.
