Report Supplied By USDA Friday, January 24,2003 CATTLE CALVES THIS WEEK 2178 1639 LAST WEEK 2538 1639 LAST YEAR 2163 1771 Compared to last week, slaughter steers sold 1.00-2.00 higher. Demand was very good all week, especially for the right kind, and it also helps when there are some well-fed steers on offer. There are still some producers that continue to roll the dice by hauling steers in weighing well over 1500 lbs. It is definitely a gamble to market cattle this way, although some of the heavies are trading in the upper 70.00 range, but remember, some are in the lower 60.00 money as well. Producers are still bewildered when they watch their steers tip the scales weighing from 1450-1550 lbs, as cattle have performed exceptionally well this winter in Lancaster County. Holstein heifers were not well tested early in the week, but prices were noted with a higher undertone late in the week. Holstein steers were also in light supply early, however, a very good run late in the week sold very well. Prices for the better quality steins ranged from 63.00- which was a definitely a higher undertone. Slaughter cows sold firm to 4.00 higher, with the bulk of the increase on the late week run. The Mon day and Tuesday sale did have moderate increases, trending firm to 1.00 higher. However, late in the week buyers came in with their guns blazin', as cows boasted a 1 00-3.00 increase. The Western direct feed yards have moved some steers from 78.00- as of Thursday evening, al though the bulk have yet to tiade. This is a full 1.00 lower than last week, with the Board faltering slight!) late in the week as it dips below 80.00. Slaughter bulls sold fully 2.00-3.00 higher on very good, high quality runs. This week's reported supply included 30 percent steers, 7 percent heif ers, 48 peicent cows, 4 percent bulls, with the balance feeders.
