Judge Ken Bauman of New Car lisle, Ohio, answers the question of what exactly a judge is looking for when challenged with a myri ad of entries in this year’s edible nut competition: “We’re looking for good nuts!” That’s exactly what Judge Bauman found when he was presented with Chelsea Cool’s Persian (English) walnut entry. Chelsea, a resident of Big lerville, Adams County, was graced with a Grand Champion of Show Award plaque for her notable exhibit. As simple as this statement may be, it took a whole lot of "Rockspring Vin Daffy Dandelion,” an 8-year-old Lamancha, was named supreme champion dairy goat at the Farm Show. Assist ants to the judge would break ap proximately three nuts from each submission and evaluate a few es sential characteristics like how well the nuts crack and come apart, how well the meat comes out in halves and quarters, the size of the meat, and the colora tion. To simplify, Judge Bauman states that usually, “bigger is bet ter” and the lighter the coloration of the nutmeat, the more desira ble the flavor. With over 18 classes, and as many as 11 subclasses, the judges evaluated mostly using just visual observations.
