On Tuesday, Messick’s celebrated 50 years in the agricultural marketplace with a press conference and open house here in Eliza bethtown. Messick’s also presented community service awards to dignitaries and agri professionals. Smith, Theunis Headline Stakeholders Conference HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) Rick Smith, chief executive officer of Dairylea Cooperative, Inc., and Carl Theunis, CEO of Tinedale Farm LLP in Wiscon sin, will present at the 2002 Pennsylvania Dairy Stake holders Conference at the Holiday Inn East in Harris burg Dec. 11-12. Eleven other presenters, including dairy producers, processors, retailers and dairy market innovators, will join Smith and Tinedale to address'the opportunities and responsibilities that will define the future of the Northeast dairy industry. Smith has been the CEO of Dairylea, based in Syra cuse, since 1988 and has represented the more than 2,500 dairy farmers throughout the Northeast who are members of Dairylea. He also serves as chief operating officer of the Northeast Council of Dairy Farmers of America and serves as chief executive officer of Dairy Marketing Services, LLC, a joint milk-marketing ven ture between Dairylea and Dairy Farmers of America in the Northeast. Smith will lead a panel discussion on “the Northeast dairy industry, where we are and where we can be,” sharing his insight on the opportunities that await those involved in the industry. Tinedale Farms LLP is a 1,800-cow facility and 4,000-acre cropping operation. Theunis and his wife Sharon have four sons who are all partners and man agers in the business. The operation is divided into profit centers that enable the managers to develop strategies for success. Theunis is also involved in an ex citing new company, Ag Environmental Solutions LLC, which has developed an anaerobic digestion sys tem and a solids separation system targeting phospho rous removal for the dairy industry. Tinedale will lead a panel discussion on “Successful, Successive Dairy Operations.” In addition to Smith and Tinedale’s panel discus sions, the conference will include a panel discussion on dealing with local ordinances and governmental regu lations, which will include presentations by Christme Kellett from Dickinson Penn State Ag Law Center, Elam Herr from the Pennsylvania Association of Township Supervisors, Bob Ruth from Country View Family Farms swine operation, and Steve Graybeal of Graywood Farms dairy operation. The conference fee is $9O per person, which includes all meals.
