Evaluation Center Bull Test Under Way
HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) The 2002 BuU Perform
ance Test is under way at the
Pennsylvania Department of Ag
riculture’s Livestock Evaluation
Center in State College.
Bulls were placed on test on
Oct. 29th, and over the course of
112 days will be evaluated for av
erage daily weight gain, feed effi
ciency, and genetic potential.
Based on the performance of the
bulls, the Livestock Evaluation
Center can objectively determine
their hereditary potential.
By unlocking this genetic po
tential, the PA Department of
Agriculture is able to present val
uable information to beef produc
ers for their breeding programs.
“Pennsylvania agriculture has

Agriculture Secretary Sam Hayes

have to keep building

Center does this.
“At minimal cost to
the producer, genetic
traits can be evaluated
on their bulls, provid

about their herds.”

Cornell Program To Strengthen Sheep, Goat Markets
ITHACA, N.Y. —The Northeast
Sheep and Goat Marketing Program
at Cornell University was established
in Januaiy 2001 to improve the mar
keting infrastructure for sheep and
goats in the 12 northeastern states of
Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Mar
yland, Massachusetts, New Hamp
shire, New Jersey, New York, Penn
sylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont,
and West Virginia.
The program is funded by the
Lamb Meat Adjustment Assistance
Program, which resulted from legal
actions taken by the American Sheep
Industry Association to limit cheap
lamb imports to the U.S.
Bob Melchior was highly effective
in the marketing coordinator posi
tion for the program until his unex
pected death in early August. To
continue to serve producers in the
Northeast and fulfill the obligations
of the grant, Cornell University elect
ed to fill the marketing coordinator
position.
Susan Schoenian, a University of
Maryland (small ruminant) extension
agent and sheep and goat producer,
assumed 50 percent of the responsi-
$6.4 million, is moving towards
completion,” noted Secretary
Hayes. “Agriculture is our num
ber one industry in Pennsylvania,
contributing over $4O billion an
nually to our economy. To keep
Pennsylvania’s livestock species
out-front in the quest of genetic
excellence, we need to provide
21st century facilities.
“Now it is time for a test facili
ty that better reflects what our
livestock producers need,” said
Secretary Hayes.
“This new complex is ten times
larger than the current facility
operated by the PA Department
of Agriculture. Our new Live
stock Evaluation Center is over
178,000 square feet and will in
clude learning venues for stu
dents of agriculture and a meet
ing place for agriculture
conferences.”
