CATTLE: Compared to Thursday, slaughter
cows sold steady to firm. Buyer attendance was
fairly light, although the few buyers on hand
kept the bidding relatively active. Cow carcass
cutout values were over 3.00 higher early last
week, which in turn has left some spark in the
market to kick off the week. Slaughter bulls
sold with a lower undertone on a light test The
quality of the bull run was a lot lower when
compared to the past few weeks, with bidding
moderate to weak due to the decrease. Slaugh
ter cows made up nearly 52 percent of the run.

Compared to Thursday's very active market,
slaughter steers sold mostly steady on Monday,
trending with a higher undertone on the bulk of
the Choice and Prime steers on Tuesday. Bid
ding was very active Tuesday on the high Select
and low Choice steers, along with the higher
dressing slock, as prices trended as much as
200 higher The quality of Monday's run was
about average, with a lot more Select and over
finished steers on hand than normal However,
Tuesday's supply was made up of some fancier
type fats, with several high dressers on hand
bringing as much as 72.75. A good portion of
Tuesday's run sold in the 70’s, although there
were only around 120 on offer; therefore the de
mand definitely outweighed the supply, which
could have been one of the largest reasons
prices were higher. Although it makes sense
that packer demand is picking up as the Febru
ary live cattle contract at the CME is pushing
78.00; therefore, many buyers are willing to give
in the lower 70.00 range now, knowing in a few
short months there is a possibility those same

CALVES: Compared to last Tuesday, veal
calves sold 5.00-10.00 higher in very good buyer
interest. Holstein bulls suitable for special-fed
veal bams sold sharply lower. Bulls this week
failed to hit 120.00 after trading a high as
145.00 last week; also, there is a very noticeable
price spread between the number 1 and number
two bulls as buyers are being very selective of
the quality. A light test of Holstein heifers sold
with a higher undertone after several weeks of
lower prices. The supply included 711 in the
state graded sale, with around 87 percent of the
graded supply returning to feed.

LAST YEAR
CATTLE’ Compared to Tuesday, slaughter steers
told fully 1 00 to instances of 2 00 higher on a very at*
tractive run Both buyer attendance and activity were
very good right from the beginning as there were near
ly 400 head of steers on offer, although you would have
thought there were only 100 as Buyers were extremely
aggressive, especially on the fancy ones Holiday de
mand, coupled with a futures Board that is lined up to
be very bullish this winter, have forced many buyers to
either leave at the end of the day with an average of
over 7000, or to leave with an empty trailer. The
slaughter heifer supply included over 100 head, which
is a noticeable increase when compared to the last cou
ple of months. When compared to Tuesday's light sup
ply, Heifers trended firm to fully 1.00 higher as buyers
were quick to procure the well finished stock. Due to a
very light test of Holstein steers on Tuesday, a full
market comparison was not available; however a high
er undertone was noted on Thursday's very nice run
On a very good run, Lean and Boning cows sold firm to
1.00 higher; with Breaking cows trending 100-3 00
higher. With over 500 cows on offer the demand and
supply should have been very even, however buyers
were very active in procuring their needs as the holiday
season is quickly approaching. Cow carcass cutout val
ues continue to climb, even in the face of the Thanks
giving holiday where turkey is the meat of choice. A
slaughter bull trend was not established due to Tues
day's very light supply. The supply included 31 per
cent steers, 8 percent heifers, 40 percent cows, 7 per
cent bulls, with the balance feeders.
