Early Russian porcelain copied the French style but often had Russian scenes. Historically, Russian porcelain manufacturing had a rough be ginning. Many efforts had been made beginning with Peter the Great to establish a Rus- ____ sian porcelain factory. He “* sent secret agents to Ger many to discover the se crets of the Meissen fac tory. One agent purchased the secret, but it didn’t men tion one important ele ment. Without it, the factory couldn’t function. However the problem was solved and by 1756 the Imperial State Porcelain factory had expert staff and workers. By 1762 Catherine the Great became involved. During her reign massive dinner sets and hundreds of Russian figures were made. The figures made well into the late 19th cen tury make frequent auction appearance. Prices range from $6OO to several thousand dollars. As the demand for fine porcelain grew, private in dividuals were encouraged to establish porcelain fac tories. The most important of these was Francis Ya kovlevoch Garden Today, the porcelain made by the Gardner factory is consid ered among the finest made during the late 18th to late 19th centimes. Fac tories continued to grow until by 1870 there were 70. In 1891 the Gardner factory was taken over by a mas sive pottery and porcelain com bine: The Kuznetsov factories. By the twentieth century this factory produced two thirds of Russian ceramics, including the porcelain. Following the Russian Revolu tion two important factories were Lomonosov Porcelain Factory, Leningrad and State Factory, Pe public Auction of VALUABLE CHESTER CO.
