New Holland Hog Auction NEW HOLLAND, PA October 21,2002 Report Supplied By Auction HOG RECEIPTS: 692 head, last Mon day 696; last year 1115. Receipts: 692. Compared to last Monday, barrows and gilts sold fully 1.00- lower. Many hog buyers felt that it was time to realign somewhat with the Western terminal markets; which are moving hogs weaker from around 28.00. Lean hog futures also took a hit at Mon days 1 close, closing down 10-97 cents. The general packer attitude at Mondays 1 auc tion was we need them, but we don't need them bad enough to keep paying 38.00- for the fancy ones. However, feeders need to remember that even with the bulk of the hogs bringing from 31.00- that it is still a 3.00-7.00 pre mium when compared to the Western market. This weeks 1 feeder pig run was not tested, due to last weeks 1 very light show ing. Although, this week over 35 percent of the supply went back on feed, as feed ers begin to show some interest after sev eral weeks of very light participation. On the weights that were comparable, slaugh ter pigs sold with a higher undertone; ex cept for the 30-35 pounders, which sold noticeably lower. The crowd at Wednes days 1 auction was very light, and prices held up very well considering the light buyer attendance; and the fact that re ceipts were 200 head stronger when com pared to last weeks 1 . The Western termi nal hog markets continue to trend lower the first half of the week; with prices ranging from 26.00-28.00 at Wednesdays 1 close. Locally, hog prices are ranging from 31.00-35.50, although many produc ers are preparing for the next cycle of lower prices. All pigs were weighed and graded on arrival and sold by the hundred weights.
