To get to the champion drive of the New Holland Swine Show Tuesday evening, judge Jim Parlett whittled down the 31-head show to the animals that “represent what a market hog should be," showing style, mus cle, and soundness, according to judge Jim Parlett. Jonathan Rupert’s 264-pound hog, stylish, with a level top and ribs that “open up really well,” fit the bill for judge Parlett. “If you want your hog to be a champion, it ought to look like a champion,” he said. In only his second year exhibi ting hogs, Jonathan, 14, is a freshman at Cocalico High School. He has shown dairy beef for several seasons, but the hog ring is a new arena for Jonathan, In his second year showing hogs, Jonathan Rupert won grand champion honors. His success at the New Hol land swine show is not new, how ever, as he also had the grand champion hog at this summer’s Lancaster County 4-H Roundup. His animal comes from a hog op eration a few miles from his home. Jonathan has aspirations of be coming a future dairy farmer. The hog show was a near miss for reserve champion winner Ra chel Brubaker, Kinzers, a fresh man at Pequea Valley. Rachel ar rived as the show was more than halfway over from a hockey game. However she did get there in time to take her 252-pound hog to reserve champion placing. From Jet Age Farms, a 380-head hog operation, Rachel is the daughter of Doug and Brenda Brubaker. Her older brother, Jacob, also exhibited hogs at the fair including standing in for his sister during the first part of the New Holland swine show. Besides county fairs, she has also exhibited hogs at the Farm Show. Judge Parlett, Airville, York County, has 350-400 hogs on his operation, Twin Maples Farm. Besides selling club pigs and market hogs to individuals, he also sells breeding stock. Parlett has been showing for many years, starting with his first champion animal at age nine. He has judged hogs for 10-12 years. The New Holland show was his fourth show to judge this year. Results follow: NEW HOLLAND FAIR SWINE SHOW RESULTS LIGHTWEIGHT MARKET SWINE Class 1: 1.
