Washing machines are a big help to house wives. And, so are dryers and dishwashers. Although, many an important conversation can be held over doing dishes with a family member. Even what we do on Sunday has changed. Not everyone re serves Sunday for church serv ices. No longer do people visit relatives and Mends on a Sunday afternoon. Rather we read the The STREAM MAP OF PENNSYLVANIA was completed in 1965 after a thirty-year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor. The map is known as the LOST STREAM MAP to some anglers. Professor Higbee succeed ed in creating a map of the high est detail possible...a map that shows every stream and lake. He painstakingly plotted by hand the location of 45,000 miles of streams onto a 3 by 5 foot map. The map sold extremely well-until it was lost several years later, Incredibly, the printer entrusted with the original draw ing and printing plates declared bankruptcy, then carelessly hauled Higbee’s 30 years of work to a landfill. The few remaining dog eared copies became a prized fisherman’s possession. Professor Higbee was offered $4OO for one of his last maps. And state agencies were forced to keep their copies under lock and key. Experts told Professor Higbee that reprints were impos sible, because the maps were printed in non-photographic blue. Then, in 1991, at the age of 91, Howard Higbee's dream came true. Computers made it possible to reprint the map. Howard said, “I never thought I’d live to see this day." Sunday newspaper or take a nap. It is a pleasant experience to have someone phone or simply drop in to visit. Farmers always have something to talk about. Maybe it is the weather or their animals. Long ago we did not tell people that we were coming we simply stopped by. There were grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins to visit regularly. My grandfather had a radio with head phones and it was a privilege to use them. Only one person could listen at one time and it was very special to hear people’s voices. Why every angler and boater needs these maps It is estimated that 10% of all the anglers catch 90% of the fish. But we must re member that people no longer work 44 hours for $l5. That is what I was paid in 1940. Clothes were also much less expensive at that time.
