ANSWER - Debra Allgy er wanted to know how to clean, re-season, and store cast-iron skillets that be come sticky from not being used. Thanks to a reader for sending the following instructions: Spray cast iron with oven cleaner and follow cleaning directions listing on the can. Repeat the process if necessary. To re-season, warm skillet and grease with a thin coating of vegetable oil or fat (never use salted fats) over entire skillet including all comers. Place in oven and heat to 300-350 de grees for 30-60 minutes. Allow to remain in oven until it cools to room tem perature. Store in warm, dry place with a paper towel inside to absorb any moisture. ANSWER - Ronald Clouser, Wiliiamstown, re quested a source to pur chase wicks for a kerosene cooking stove. A reader writes a large inventory of wicks are available from Miller’s Hardware, 1104 W. ANSWER - For the per son who wanted a spray to repel deer and rabbits from gardens, here are several homemade recipe repel lents sent in by a reader. She also writes that she places Ivory soap in old nylon stockings and ties to trees to repel deer. Liver Repellent Spray For Deer, Rabbits 1 pound raw liver (any type) 2 gallons warm water 2 gallon bucket Garden-spray equipment Place liver in the bucket and cover with water. Allow it to soak for 30 minutes, then discard liver and use the liquid as a spray. You may save the livers from chicken and place in the freezer until you have one pound to use to make this spray. Dried Blood Spray For Deer, Rabbits 1 tablespoon dried blood 2 gallons warm water Stirrer Garden spray equipment Be safe: dried blood is rich in nitrogen and may bum plants if applied in concentrated doses. Mea sure carefully when you prepare this spray and use It somewhat sparingly. Dis solve the dried blood in a bucket of water and apply as a spray as needed. Egg-Based Deer Repellent 1 1 /2 dozen eggs 5 gallons water Electric mixer with large mixing bowl 5 gallon bucket Stir stirring stick Garden spray equipment Beat eggs in bowl, pour into bucket. Add water slowly and stir thoroughly. Apply as a spray. Be sure to spray clear water through the spray equip ment after you have used this formula. Egg residue left in the nozzle may clog the equipment. To maintain effectiveness, apply spray again after rains. Castor-Oil Mole Repellent Castor beans planted around the perimeter of the garden are a traditional de terrent for moles and shrews. You can substitute this formula for the plants. V 2 cup castor oil 2 gallons warm water Stirrer 2 gallon bucket Mix oil and water in a bucket and use as a soil drench around the perime ter of the garden. Apply the drench as soon as you see any signs of mole activity. Within three weeks, the garden should be mole free. ANSWER - A reader wanted to know how to keep potatoes over the winter. Can they be stored in picnic-type coolers? If in a garden shed, unheated, how much cold can pota toes tolerate? Thanks to Eldon R. Martin, Abbotts town, for writing that his family raises and sells Ken nebec potatoes. They do not wash the potatoes so they will store well for win ter use if kept in the dark at approximately 50 de grees. Is Your Drinking Water Safe? HONESDALE (Wayne Co.) Homeowners and business people often take it for granted that the water coming out of their tap is safe for drinking, but a number of potentially harmful substances can harm your family or custom ers;. 1 These include bacteria, ni trates, iron and manganese. Some of these substances have health effects and others can cause un wanted stains and odors. If you depend on your own well or spring for your drinking water, it is your responsibility to have your water tested periodi cally at a certified water-testing lab. No government agency is going to require you to have your water tested. On Wednesday, Oct. 16, Penn State Cooperative Extension will be having a Safe Drinking Water Clinic. This clinic is designed for people interested in having their drinking water tested and finding out how to protect and maintain their water systems. Two Penn State Water Quality Extension Specialists will be con ducting the program. In addition, Prosser Labs will be offering water testing for a fee. Con tainers for water testing will be available at the Wayne County Cooperative Extension office starting Sept. 2. The Safe Drinking Water Clin ic will take place from 2-4 p.m. at the Wayne County Visitors Cen ter Community Room in Hon esdale. There is no charge for the program. However, registration is required.
