    Market Animals Sold At Rockingham Fair

HARRISONBURG, Va.
Some 227 market lambs, 92 mar
ket steers and 134 market swine
were sold at the Rockingham
County Fair on Friday, Aug. 16.
Laura Sponaugle’s supreme
grand champion lamb weighing
130 pounds was purchased by
Cargill Turkey Products at a
hefty $10.25 per pound, or
$1,332.50, for the 16-year old
from Grottoes. Cargill Turkey
Products was represented by Bill
Griffin and Brett Seal.
Ashley Good’s reserve lamb
weighing 135 pounds, was pur
chased by Arnel Investments and
Goods Towing for $6.20 per
pound, or $837. Good, of Mount
Clinton, is 16 and a junior at the
Turner-Ashby High School.

per pound, or $857.50.

The total weight of market
lambs amounted to 26,200
pounds and officials tallied the
average weight at 115 pounds.
The average price for lambs was
$2.65 per pound.
Beam Brothers, represented by
Gerald Beam, took the bidding
for Alissa Michael’s 1,340 pound
supreme grand champion steer to
$2.50 and paid the 14-year Port
Republic girl, a grand sum of
$3,350 for the Angus crossbred
animal.

chased the supreme reserve
grand champion steer owned by

combined total weight of 116,165
pounds. The steers average
weight was figured at 1,263
pounds and the average overall
price was just slightly less than
$l. In the sale booklet they were
graded either as Choice or Select.
Evers Restaurant, represented
by Rudolph Evers, purchased
Dezirae Allman’s 260-pound su
preme grand champion swine for
$3.25 per pound, or $845. The
Dayton girl is 14 years old.
The supreme reserve champion
swine owned by Laura Sponau
gle, Grottoes, was purchased by
Tyrone Scott for $1.75, or $455.
It weighed 260-pounds.
In swine pairs Caity Armen
trout’s 495 pound supreme grand
champion pair was purchased at
$1.50 per pound, or $742.50, by
White Tire.

Armentrout, of Mount Craw
ford, is 12.
The 480 pound supreme re
serve champion swine pair
owned by Laura Sponaugle,
Grottoes, was purchased by First
Bank and Trust at $1 per pound,
or $4BO.
The total weight of some 134
swine was 32,805 pounds, with
an average weight of 245 pounds.
The price per pound averaged
$1.58 for swine.
Some 90 hogs were graded No.
1 and 44 were graded No. 2.
Several youths said they had
decided already to reinvest their
money for other market animals
to show in 2003. Laura Sponau
gle, however, indicated that the
extra financial resources at her
disposal will be disbursed in sev
eral ways in the coming year.
“I made a good amount of
money on my lambs and pigs,”
the teenager said. “This is the
first year to put some in a college
