822-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Antique Detective (Continued from Page B 21) pending on documented prove nance. At a recent Skinner auc tion in Boston, a Federal cherry tilt-top stand sold for $9,400 over an estimate of $1,500-2,500. It came with great prove nance. A Federal tiger maple candlestand, c. 1815-25 brought $1,058 and a black painted cherry candlestand, 18th cen tury sold for $5BB. There have also been docu mented candlestands attributed to Duncan Phyfe. By the 1830 s tripod tables had lost their charm. One rea son was that factory production was replacing the individual craftsman. Bases were heavy and the mortise and tenon joints were glued, rather than nailed. Tripod tables were out of fashion by the mid 19-century, replaced by the var ious plant and lamp tables in Rococo and other revival styles. In the 1920 s both country and high style candlestands were reproduced. However, those reproduced for the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial are now considered collectible in their own right as “Centennial pieces.” When buying any supposedly 18th century tripod table, turn it upside down and look at the construction, it should be rough to the touch. Identifiable saw marks will tell you if it was made after 1830 or in the 20th century. Look for old rose head nails. If it is painted don’t strip it. It is still possible to make discov eries.
