WOOSTER, Ohio Soybean growers may be looking to get their crop in the ground, but they especially need to keep in mind two insect pests this grow ing season. The soybean aphid and bean leaf beetle are problematic for soybean growers and can cause economic losses either from feeding or through the transmis sion of viruses. Ohio State University Exten sion specialists recommend that growers scout their fields for the presence of the insects as the growing season wears on and take appropriate management actions as deemed necessary. The soybean aphid, the first known aphid to colonize soy beans, is a relatively new insect that has, in just two years’ time, spread throughout the midwest region of the country. States that reported soybean aphid popula tions last year included Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Lancaster Fanning Circulation Main: 717-394-3047 717-721-4412 • 717-721-4411 Monday, Wednesday & Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Thursday 7:00 am to 5:00 pm Fill in vour name, address, telephone number C heck appropriate payment box *S I issues - $46 00 104 issues - SOI 00 in PA, MD DC NJ, NY, Ot I, VA, WV * All other states S 2 issues - $47 00 Outside U S - Call for pure quote Payment must accompany irder - Allow three weeks for subscription to start Cut your mail label from a recent issue and place in the space provided below Write your new address and telephone number on the form below In addition, provide a requested date for address change to take effect Send 3 to 4 weeks prior to your requested date Lancaster Farming will send a renewal notice to you prior to the expiration date of your subscription You may renew your subscription using the form below To insure proper credit for your subscription - Attach Yc from a recent Lancaster Farming issue and check the appropriate payment boxes Renewal - Change of Address Please send this form & payment to: Lancaster Farming PO Box 609 Ephrata, PA 17522 (Check appropriate Boxes) Rates Effective Through 04/30/03 □ New Subscription □ Renewal - Attach Mailing Label Above □ Address Change - Attached Mailing Label Above Date to Change / / □ $36.00 -1 yr (52 issues) □ $47.00 -1 yr (52 issues) □ $65.00 - 2 yrs (104 issues) □ $87.00 - 2 yrs (104 issues) Name Address Address + 4 □ I have enclosed a Check/Money Order □ AmEx □ Please charge my credit card □MC □ Visa □ Discover iiiiiitii i i i i m i rrm Signature for Credit Card Payment Only NON REFUNDABLE Soybean Planters Need To Look For Insects Indiana, Kentucky, lowa and Wisconsin. The insect has also been reported in Virginia, West Virginia, New York and On tario, Canada. Researchers know very little about the soybean aphid what exactly is its overwintering host, whether or not it’s a vector for disease, and why larger insect populations tend to be found in more northern states. But what they do know is that high insect populations can cause significant yield loss to the crop Ron Hammond, an Ohio State Extension entomologist with the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, said some states reported an average six to eight bushel loss per acre last year due to soybean aphid feed ing. “Some fields had as high as a 12 to 15 bdshel loss per acre. There were reports in Ohio that indicated loss ranged from five to 10 bushels per acre. Researchers in Ohio and other states speculate that yield losses are coming from the insect feed ing, rather than from soybean mosaic virus that the insect is able to transmit. The second insect growers should keep their eye on is the bean leaf beetle, a defoliator and pod feeder that is also a vector of bean pod mottle virus. The virus causes yield reduction in seed quality and yield, which is a problem for food-grade soybean Garrett Cecil Sommerset PA Frederick Sommerset PA ountv Ass’n Carrol! One of the main symptoms of bean pod mottle virus is green-stem syndrome, where the plant stem remains green right up to harvest and pods are malformed. “We are getting reports now that the bean leaf beetle is emerging, which may be of a concern for those growers who have already planted their soy beans,” said Hammond. “With all the rain we’ve been having, nlantine has been very spotty got mi High Maryland DHIA (Continued from Page B 14) Mar Shirl Guernsey Chesapeake Gold Farm Inc Thomas F Walker Anovadale Guemsevs Joe Walker JtRSFV Herd Name Queen Acres Jersevs Janet <1 Trace Stiles Fr\ &.
