CLUES: The average collector during the 1970 s didn’t know about Chinese Imari. As far as they were concerned it was all Japa nese. However as interest grew, so did research Chinese Imari was redis covered and the clues that made it identifiable. For ex ample, Chinese Imari is thin and dense with a greenish look. Japanese Imari has a grayish tint and is coarser. There are subtle color con trasts as well. The Japanese red is Indian red while the Chinese red is an iron red, coral color. The Japanese is opaque. The Japanese black is brownish while the Chi nese is greenish. The spur marks used as supports during firing appear on Japanese pieces but not usually on Chinese Imari.
