EDGEWATER, Md. After almost three full days of meet ings, the Maryland Grain Pro ducers Utilization Board (MGPUB) completed the yearly process of allocating checkoff funds. Funds are provided in the form of grants to help promote research, education, and the market development of grain. “It is never an easy job,” stated Drew Stabler, long-time board member for MGPUB and grain farmer in Montgomery County. “Because the checkoff funds are based on a percentage of our net income, the level of funding will differ each year due to changes in market prices and yields. Though our board real izes all the grants applied for have value, we really have to weigh the benefits of each when deciding which projects to fund and at what level.” Grant recipients must submit a report at the end of each year. This allows the MGPUB board to see exactly how monies were used and is a great source of in formation for further funding. Many of the research projects have proven to be of great value for Maryland farmers. Maryland Grain Board Completes Funding Process rently, a study by Virginia Tech to develop a variety of hull-less barley is under way. It is the hope of the MGPUB that Mary land growers will soon have a variety of hull-less barley that is extremely productive and easy to handle. As barley is the small grain feedstock being considered for the proposed ethanol plant in Maryland, its addition to the market should be timely. “We are very excited about this project. As our barley mar kets have diminished, this can make a significant difference to how much barley is grown. Barley is a very abrasive crop but eliminating the hull makes this a much easier crop to deal with. Barley serves as a great cover crop and its potential to be used in an ethanol plant gives it much more value,” added Donnie Tennyson, MGPUB member and farmer in St. Mary’s County. “This type of re search project can really make a difference for Maryland farm ers.” Another project of great inter est is the research done by Dr. Ken Staver of the Wye Research and Education Center. Although data will continue to be collected on this project through April of this year, sev eral preliminary findings were presented. Stabler stated, “As we are in the midst of some nutrient man agement problems, studies of this nature can really make a difference in showing what does and doesn’t work with nitrogen applications. Our Board believes that using checkoff funds for this kind of valuable research can help both farmers and nu trient management consultants make effective decisions.” Flywheel grinder Van Nor man 444, v g cond , $5OO, bake oven for eng blocks, $5OO, 561 surface grinder, $1,500, David Allonardo, 1350 Weymouth Rd , Vineland, NJ 08360 Clefrac or Oliver crawler dozer blade w/complete assembly brackets & hyds necessary to install on crawler, $695, Lehigh Co, 610-799-2484 Tractor turf tires w/nms 18 4-16 1, $6OO, 2 Lawn boy mowers, $lOO, new 36” Grisham door, very ornate, $l5O, Fred Co, 301-898- 9916 Field sprayer, 200 gal, trail- Lancaster Farming Check out our Website www.lancasterfarmina com 1985 VW Quantum GLS, 5 spd , 145,961 mi, inspect ed, dk grey, 4 dr, runs good, $540 as is, York Co , 717-259-9256 4 185/65R14 Firestone FR6BO on 99 Honda Civic rims w/wheel covers, $l2O, Chester Co, 610-495-5483 Used alum roofing, good cond, 4’xl6’ sheets $9/sheet, A A Co, 410- 969-9324 Int 140 ROPS canopy, will fit Super A, $l5O, Farmall H, gas tank, hood, $35 each, Bradford Co , 570- 746-2207 JD 6600 side hill combine w/4RW corn head, eng hs low compression, rebuild or parts, $2,000, York Co , 717-456-7783 Gehl 7285 TMR mixer wag on, $1,200, sale or trade on smaller tractor, JD 2940, 4WD, 16 sp, Blair Co, 814- 944-0818 1991 Toyota p/u ext cab 4x4, V 6, 5 spd , cap, bedlm er, new tires, shocks, clutch, exhaust, $3,950 080, Berks Co, 610-944- 7509 Alum 12" wheels w/tires, great for pulling tractor, must sell, MO, used Van mar 3T75U dsl eng , $l,OOO 080, Lane Co, 717-445-4541 Ml 208 PTO manure spreader, low profile, great for hand loading, new apron chain last yr, $725, Mifflin Co, 717-667-6838 Angus bull, 10 mo old, purebred, no papers, $550, York Co, 717-292-3816 Subsoiler 3 pt, 6 pt, $l,OOO, chisel plow, 3 pt, $l,OOO, 78TransAm, 3,500 mi , $6,000, water tanker trailer, $l,OOO, Dauphin Co, 717-362-9850 Spurred geaar block, 5 ton, $125, Owen pull behind asphalt spreader, $125, 36" Along with research, the MGPUB funded grants for many programs involving school-aged children...beginning with elementary schools and going through high school. In many cases, children in the counties represented have very little or no exposure to agricul ture. These focused presenta tions allow children to experience first-hand the impor tance of grains and agriculture to their lives. Market development is an other huge area of importance for MGPUB funding. These are mostly large, national organiza tions representing individual states in a collective manner such as the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA), US Wheat Associates, and US w/14” Bar TOOLS, WOT TOYS. These organiza tions work to develop new mar kets at the national and international level and offer in dividual states a much larger voice. A prime example of the power of these organizations would be last year when President Bush denied California’s request to opt out of the federal reformu lated gasoline (RFG) oxygen re quirement. The NCGA was instrumental in providing and presenting sound research on why the RFG requirement was beneficial and should be left in place. This denial opened the door for many millions of dol lars in ethanol production.
