Family Living Focus by M. Annette Goodling Union County Extension Agent Raising Children In Today’s World For this holiday season. I’m suggesting a gift parents can give themselves. James Garbarino, one of my favorite authors on parenting issues, has co-authored a new book for parents “Par ents Under Siege: Why You Are the Solution, Not the Problem in Your Child’s Life.” Dr. Garbarino and Claire Bed ard share their observations in helping parents recognize their own potential influence on their children. Parenting, in the face of the “toxic” societal conditions of today to which our children are LOST STREAM MAP The STREAM MAP OF PENNSYLVANIA was completed in 1965 after a thirty-year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor. The map is known as the LOST STREAM MAP to some anglers. Professor Higbee succeeded in creating a map of the highest detail possible...a map that shows every stream and lake. He painstakingly plotted by hand the location of 45,000 miles of streams onto a 3x5 map. The map sold extremely well - until it was lost several years later. Incredibly, the printer entrusted with the original drawing and printing plates declared bankruptcy, then carelessly hauled Higbee’s 30 years of work to a landfill. The few remaining dog-eared copies became a prized possession. Professor Higbee was offered $4OO for one of his last maps. And state agencies were forced to keep their copies under lock and key Experts told Professor Higbee that reprints were impossible, because the maps were printed in non-photographic blue. Then, in 1991, at the age of 91, Howard Higbee’s dream came true Computers made it possible to reprint the map. Howard said, “I never thought I’d live to see this day ” exposed requires lots of tools. They have designed a parent’s “toolbox” of ten conceptual tools that you might want to investi gate as other potential gifts to use in parenting your children. Listed below is a sampling of their sug gestions: An intellectual micro scope for looking at the world of children. A periscope for seeing the world through the eyes of each child’s individual temperament. A developmental calculator to tally the accumulation of risks and opportunities in a child’s life. A psychological tape measure for mapping a child’s world. A social Geiger counter for iso lating cultural poisons in the child’s experience. The moral compass of charac ter. A psychological jack for sup porting children as they build character and competence. A set of multicultural keys for unlocking cultural resource to meet a child’s social challenges. The authors suggest children can serve “as the weather vanes and social indicators of what is going on. If we know how to look, we can see it in every mes sage they send.” This book helps parents deci pher the messages their children are sending. . The authors’ research shows that “young children’s exposure to violence reduces a child’s con fidence that he of she will survive into old age.” This suggests rea sons why youth tend to live for the moment and willingly partici pate in “risky” behavior.
