Thanks to Richard Herring, Kennett Square, for sending the fol lowing information: • Poinsettias need indi rect sunlight at least six hours daily. Place a curtain of light shade between the sun and the plant if direct sunlight cannot be avoided. Temperatures should not exceed 70 degrees or fall below 55 degrees. • Keep poinsettias away from heat and drafts as the soil must stay moderately moist. Water thoroughly when the soil feels dry to touch. Do not let the plant stand in water. • After blooming, fertil lize every two to three weeks with a balanced household fertilizer to maintain foilage. • When the top-colored grwoth (bratts) lose their appeal, cut the plant back to about eight inches. Though stark in appear ance, by May the plant will have new growth. By June 1, repot the plant. Use heavily organic soil. Place the plant outdoors when the weather is warm. • The plant will begin producing flowers in the fall. Starting Oct. 1, be sure the poinsettia has a least four hours of total, contin uous darkness each night and about six to eight hours of bright sunlight each day. The plant will not bloom properly without this strict regimen. Night time temperatures must not be below 60 degrees.
