National Feeder Cattle Weekly Summary St. Joseph, Mo. October 5,2001 Report Supplied By USDA NATIONAL FEEDER CATTLE SUMMARY - Week ending Oct. 5, 2001. Receipts: This week 190,800; last week 202,100; year ago 203,400. Trading of feeder cattle has not been easy on pro ducers the past three weeks as the market has moved sharply lower Ihe decline has been faster than most can re member. According to USDA’s Live stock and Grain Market News Service, feeder cattle and calves moved mostly 2.00 to 4.00 lower from the Northwest to the Southeast, except for some trends being reported in the High Plains of weak to 2.00 lower. Some firmness could be seen toward the end of the week as higher futures tended support. Much of the softness is due to farmers being in the fields either planting wheat or running the combine. One knows that once the Are is built in the engine, a farmer will not stop until all is done. Those running the combines do not want to be bothered with doctoring calves when they should be in the field. Those buying right now may be getting the bargains if the cattle are not carrying any excess condition. Weaned and vaccinated calves are the type being sought after right now as the warm days and cold nights can wreak havoc on a calf's immune system Cooler temperatures are being forecasted for much ot the country this weekend, with warmer weather behind the cold front that will bring in Mr. Jack Frost in some areas. Country feeder cattle trading is not offering any support as numbers %»!■ 4 - IBI * f *fimn - ,n »i' l\ Get in here today for an up-close look at the 2002 Suzuki Quadßunner* ATVs, including the all-new Vinson" 500 and Eiger" series! Early in the week, feeder cattle prices were following the anticipated demise of the fed cattle trade as some fats were traded steady to 1.00 lower early. However, support from the futures spurred a 1.00 to 2.00 higher trade late m the week The feeders that were pessimistic and did not stick to their guns are kicking themselves for giving in too soon this week. Showlists will get lighter as the heavies get moved out of the lots. Futures have rebounded to close Friday limit up above 69 00 Look for retailers to get out there and buv product as the live product is moving higher It seems that the feeders have turned the corner and are looking to greener pastures.
