It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane,
It’s Beefman At State Fair
WESTMORELAND, N.Y.
It’s state fair time again, and
along with the fair comes “Beef
Day,” an annual celebration of
the beef industry in the Empire
State.
This year’s Beef Day, sched
uled for Aug. 28, promises to be
bigger and better than ever
before.
This year, the New York Beef
Industry Council (NYBIC) will
be introducing Beefman to state
fair attendees. Beefman, a
cowboy superhero, brings ZIP
(Zinc, Iron and Protein) into the
lives of children.
“Educating children about
good nutrition and the impor
tance of maintaining a balanced
diet, which includes the appro
priate amount of beef, is a main
priority of America’s beef pro
ducers,” said Don Gray, a beef
The New York Beef Indus
try Council has a new nutri
tion mascot. Beefman will
make his first appearance
at the New York State Fair
on Beef Day, Aug. 28.

NYBIC.
“Beefman is one of the ways
in which we can spread the word
about beefs bundle of nutrients
in an exciting and informative
way for kids to gain important
information and have fun
doing it.”
Beefman will meet with chil-
dren and their parents to take
photos and deliver Beefman ac
tivity books. He will join fair at
tendees as they take part in the
Beefman Activity Center lo
cated in the pavilion at Cole
Muffler Court, playing games
such as “Pyramid Power” and
“Beef Jeopardy.”
The festivities will begin at 10
a.m. with the Governor’s Procla
mation, presented by the com
missioner of agriculture and
markets, Nathan Rudgers. Fol-
lowing the proclamation, media
contestants from Syracuse radio
and television stations will be
participating in the second
annual “Beef Up Your Hero,” a
sandwich-making contest using
fully-cooked beef and veal prod
ucts.
Last year, Rick Gary of
WIXT Channel 9 took home the
“Ultimate Beef Hero” award
with his Hormel fully-cooked
prime rib and Catelli Bros, veal
bacon sandwich. Gary will be re
turning again this year to face
even greater competition in an
attempt to defend his title.
The “Meals in Minutes” dis
play will again be in the Dairy
Products building. In addition to
serving samples of fully-cooked
beef and veal products, the
NYBIC will provide recipes and
ideas for heat n’ eat meals.
A visit to the newly-built beef
barn will provide an opportunity
for fairgoers to see a variety of
beef breeds and talk with the
beef producers. In the Art and
Home Center, the American Na
tional Cattle Women will dem
onstrate easy cooking ideas
using beef and veal.
