Receipts: 152,300, last week 168,800, year ago 155,700. Compared to last week; feeder cattle prices were mostly lower, but uneven as to how much. Yearling steers and heifers sold steady to 2.00 lower in slow country trading. However, salebarn yearling sales were steady to firm with slightly higher prices on the lighter-weight 600- 700 lb cattle that will finish soon after the first of the year. Calf prices were not as fortunate with trends quoted by the USDA’s Livestock and Grain Market Service as much as 4.00 lower, especially in the Southeast. Markets from south Texas to Florida have hit the skip in demand, between Summer grazing and when the Southwestern buyers send in orders to get ready for winter wheat. Some relief from the hot temperatures blew in from the northwest this week, but considerable rain is needed across the Plains to repair depleted pastures. It’s already too late for many ranchers who are having to sell early and others who will not be able to last until their Fall contracts mature. < Direct feedlot sales continue to slide with live sales 1.00 lower this week at 69.00, dressed sales were 2.00- 3.00 lower from 109.00-111.00. Several deliveries were tendered this week against the August CME Live Cattle Futures, which are trading near a 2.00 premium to cash. The timing is good for hedged feeders to deliver and in-turn long positions can take live delivery and gamble by going back on feed for a few weeks. Also, Fall and Winter fat cattle futures are trading in the mid to upper 70’s and cattle feed ers are keeping a sharp eye on current hedging opportunities. Even though feeder prices have been falling over the past few weeks, the market looks stable down the road, with just a little more than dollar separating CME Feeder Cattle Futures prices all the way through next Spring. This week’s re ported feeder supply included 37 percent over 600 lbs. Morrison Cove Produce Auction Roaring Spring, Pa. Report Supplied by Auction August 14,2001 APPLES: 3.50-6.25 'A BU.
