Beef, Swine, Lamb Competition Highlights Chester Roundup Week
ANDY ANDREWS
Editor
HONEY BROOK (Chester
Co.) “Jeffrey” and “Electric”
stood out strongly in market beef
competition during Chester
County 4-H Roundup Week.
“Jeffrey,” a 1,279-pound pure
bred Angus out of the light
heavyweight division, won grand
champion. Wednesday evening,
Ryan, 12, son of Cheryl and BUI
Fairbairn, CoatesvUle, sold the
steer to Hoss’s Steak and Seafood
House, represented by Craig
Campbell, corporate director of
Ryan Fairbairn, right, sold his grand champion market
steer Wednesday evening to Moss’s Steak and Seafood,
represented by Craig Campbell, corporate director of de
velopment, Altoona, for $1.90 a pound.
Eliza Walton, right, sold her reserve champion market
steer Wednesday at the Chester County 4-H Roundup
Livestock Sale to Tom Borrell, Borrell Mulch Hay and
Straw, Cochranville, for $1.90 a pound.
Grand champion market hog, shown by Hanna Mast,
went for $3.75 a pound to Thrifty Pallet, represented by
Bill Fairbairn.
development, Altoona, for $1.90
per pound.
Ryan, in the seventh grade at
CoatesviUe Catholic, said he
nicknamed the steer Jeffrey “be
cause it looked like a Jeffrey,”
and is well behaved. This was
Ryan’s first champion at the
roundup. He said he simply fed
the steer more, and exercised the
homebred champion twice week
ly-
Ryan plans to exhibit at the
Keystone International Livestock
Expo (KILE) and Farm Show.
Reserve, nicknamed “Electric”
by exhibitor Eliza Walton (‘be
cause I ran out of nicknames,”
she said), sold for $1.90 a pound
to Tom Borrell, Borrell Mulch
Hay and Straw, Cochranville.
Eliza, 16, is the daughter of
Margaret and David Walton,
Kennett Square. The Unionville
High School junior said the mid
dleweight champion steer was re
ally nice and calm, and is home
bred. Eliza won before at the
roundup, and plans to show at
Allentown, KILE, and Farm
Show.
In the market hog competition,
grand champion was the
258-pound heavyweight champi
on, a Yorkshire crossbred, exhibi
ted by Hanna Mast.
Hanna, 14, daughter of David
and Janet Mast, Elverson, nick
named the hog “Rudy” because it
“roots around a lot,” said David.
Hanna, Twin Valley High School
sophomore, said this is the first
time she has won champion, her
second year in 4-H. The hog was
purchased from Nelson Beam,
Elverson.
Reserve was exhibited by Lau
rell Stoltzfus, 11, daughter of
Scott and Bert Stoltzfiis, Gei
gertown. The Twin Valley Mid
dle School sixth grader, who was
grand champion last year, she
said, exhibited “Charlie,” a Blue
Butt that weighed 266 pounds,
the heavyweight reserve. She
named it Charlie because she
liked the name. The hog was pur
chased from Nelson Beam, Elver
son.
In market lamb competition,
the grand champion was exhibi
ted by Sara Howe, 19, daughter
of Lamar and Mary Howe,
Downingtown. Her brother,
Doug, purchased the 120-pound
heavyweight champion, a heavy
weight crossbred ewe, for $8 per
pound, representing Aery Labs
Protective Coatings, Honey
Brook.
Sara, who graduated in 2000
(homeschooled), said this was her
first champion at roundup, her
last year in 4-H. She purchased
the lamb at New Holland Sales
Stables with help from Ken
Smoker. She said her family gets
to choose between the best lambs,
but it was her sisters Laura and
Julia who allowed her to keep the
best.
Rhoda Smoker, 15, daughter
of Clair and Nancy Smoker,
Honey Brook, exhibited the re
serve champion, the reserve
heavyweight at 142 pounds. Ken
Smoker purchased the reserve
champion for $5.25 per pound.
The Suffolk crossbred ewe was
nicknamed “Fran” because
Rhoda said she liked the name.
After six years of showing lambs
at roundup, this homebied ewe
was her first champion.
In the beef show, there were 15
animals and the same number of
exhibitors. In the hog show, there
were 111 animals and 42 exhibi
tors. The lamb show had 29
lambs and 20 exhibitors.
Following is a list of show
