A44-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 11, 2001 Beef, Swine, Lamb Competition Highlights Chester Roundup Week ANDY ANDREWS Editor HONEY BROOK (Chester Co.) “Jeffrey” and “Electric” stood out strongly in market beef competition during Chester County 4-H Roundup Week. “Jeffrey,” a 1,279-pound pure bred Angus out of the light heavyweight division, won grand champion. Ryan, in the seventh grade at CoatesviUe Catholic, said he nicknamed the steer Jeffrey “be cause it looked like a Jeffrey,” and is well behaved. This was Ryan’s first champion at the roundup. He said he simply fed the steer more, and exercised the homebred champion twice week ly- Ryan plans to exhibit at the Keystone International Livestock Expo (KILE) and Farm Show. Reserve, nicknamed “Electric” by exhibitor Eliza Walton (‘be cause I ran out of nicknames,” she said), sold for $1.90 a pound to Tom Borrell, Borrell Mulch Hay and Straw, Cochranville. Eliza, 16, is the daughter of Margaret and David Walton, Kennett Square. The Unionville High School junior said the mid dleweight champion steer was re ally nice and calm, and is home bred. Eliza won before at the roundup, and plans to show at Allentown, KILE, and Farm Show. In the market hog competition, grand champion was the 258-pound heavyweight champi on, a Yorkshire crossbred, exhibi ted by Hanna Mast. Hanna, 14, daughter of David and Janet Mast, Elverson, nick named the hog “Rudy” because it “roots around a lot,” said David. Hanna, Twin Valley High School sophomore, said this is the first time she has won champion, her second year in 4-H. The hog was purchased from Nelson Beam, Elverson. Reserve was exhibited by Lau rell Stoltzfus, 11, daughter of Scott and Bert Stoltzfiis, Gei gertown. The Twin Valley Mid dle School sixth grader, who was grand champion last year, she said, exhibited “Charlie,” a Blue Butt that weighed 266 pounds, the heavyweight reserve. She named it Charlie because she liked the name. The hog was pur chased from Nelson Beam, Elver son. In market lamb competition, the grand champion was exhibi ted by Sara Howe, 19, daughter of Lamar and Mary Howe, Downingtown. Her brother, Doug, purchased the 120-pound heavyweight champion, a heavy weight crossbred ewe, for $8 per pound, representing Aery Labs Protective Coatings, Honey Brook. Sara, who graduated in 2000 (homeschooled), said this was her first champion at roundup, her last year in 4-H. She purchased the lamb at New Holland Sales Stables with help from Ken Smoker. She said her family gets to choose between the best lambs, but it was her sisters Laura and Julia who allowed her to keep the best. Rhoda Smoker, 15, daughter of Clair and Nancy Smoker, Honey Brook, exhibited the re serve champion, the reserve heavyweight at 142 pounds. Ken Smoker purchased the reserve champion for $5.25 per pound. The Suffolk crossbred ewe was nicknamed “Fran” because Rhoda said she liked the name. After six years of showing lambs at roundup, this homebied ewe was her first champion. In the beef show, there were 15 animals and the same number of exhibitors. In the hog show, there were 111 animals and 42 exhibi tors. The lamb show had 29 lambs and 20 exhibitors. Following is a list of show placings.
